Mainz in Focus: Mobility, Safety, and Inclusion in February 2026

In February 2026, the city of Mainz made decisive strides in the areas of mobility, safety, integration, and digitalization. Numerous committee meetings led to concrete measures aimed at sustainably improving the quality of life for its citizens.

The Most Important Developments of February at a Glance

  • Strengthening Cycling and Pedestrian Traffic: The City Council approved the "3 × 11 Goals for Pedestrian and Cycling Traffic" to promote climate-friendly transportation.
  • Improved Safety in the Kaiserstraße: A cross-departmental package of measures to increase safety is being developed.
  • Promoting Integration: The Advisory Board for Migration and Integration plans a panel discussion on the topic of integration.
  • Digitalization and Data Sovereignty in Focus: The Digitalization Advisory Board discussed a pilot project on use-case-based data governance.

Mobility: Climate-Friendly Transport Transition Decided

In February 2026, Mainz reached a milestone in its transport policy: The City Council adopted the "3 × 11 Goals for Pedestrian and Cycling Traffic", based on the BYPAD-Audit Report 2025. The aim is to continuously increase the share of pedestrian and cycling traffic and gradually reduce motorized individual transport.

These target values will be taken into account in future planning efforts such as the Cycling Network Mainz, the SUMP (Mobility Plan Mainz), and the Tramway Expansion. The city aims to obtain its own Pedestrian Traffic Certification and promote Barrier-Free Accessibility through measures such as tactile elements and crossing aids.

Another focus is school route planning, for which a dedicated budget item has been established. All secondary schools will be included in the ivm Project "Better to School". The Vision Zero – the goal of having no fatal or serious accidents by 2035 – is being consistently pursued.

Safety: Kaiserstraße Becomes a Safety Priority

Safety in the city center, especially in the Kaiserstraße, is a central issue. The City Council decided to develop a cross-departmental package of measures that includes police-focused initiatives, orderly measures, and the enhancement of public space. In addition, regular reporting on the measures will be introduced.

Furthermore, the City Council passed a resolution to protect volunteers involved in safety and order policy from threats and intimidation. All major factions voted in favor.

Integration and Inclusion: Advisory Boards Set Impulses

The Advisory Board for Migration and Integration met in February to discuss current developments and challenges. Central topics included the planning of a panel discussion in February 2026 and the reappointment of AGARP delegates. The session was chaired by Sima Hosseini, and the Social Affairs Director Jana Schmöller was present.

The Committee for Women's Issues discussed, among other things, a report on equal opportunities in the labor market and violence against women and children. In addition, the staffing situation in the Women's Office was discussed. The Senior Citizens Advisory Board addressed issues such as under-occupation of housing space and blackout preparedness for seniors, with concrete measures still under discussion.

Digitalization and Climate Protection: Preparations in Progress

The Digitalization Advisory Board discussed a pilot project on use-case-based data governance to strengthen data sovereignty in the municipal context. In addition, a retrospective on the work of the advisory board and a topic plan for 2026 were presented.

The Climate Protection Advisory Board prepared for the presentation of the planned data center on the Ingelheimer Aue. An waste heat concept is part of the discussion to further advance climate protection.

Overview and Outlook

February 2026 was marked in Mainz by concrete decisions in the areas of mobility, safety, integration, and digitalization. The city is relying on clear target values, cross-departmental collaboration, and participatory processes to sustainably improve the quality of life for its citizens.

March will be particularly exciting when the panel discussion of the Advisory Board for Migration and Integration takes place and the Climate Protection Advisory Board continues with the presentation of the data center concept. The implementation of the schoolyard replacement area "Am Lemmchen" will also be closely watched, as it represents a model project for future construction measures.

With these measures, Mainz demonstrates that it is continuing to develop as a livable, sustainable, and inclusive city.
