The Flomersheim Sports Field in Frankenthal – Rehabilitation Under Review

In Frankenthal, the rehabilitation of the Flomersheim Sports Field is currently in focus. After extensive discussions and expert assessments, the principle decision to renovate the sports field with artificial turf was made in April 2026. In this Deep-Dive-Blog, we examine the background, technical challenges, and financial and sports policy aspects of the project.

The Flomersheim Sports Field: A Facility in Transition

The Flomersheim Sports Field is not only a local hub for clubs and young people but also a central component of the sports infrastructure in Frankenthal. With an annual usage of approximately 1,200 hours, primarily by the TuS Flomersheim, the field is a fixed point in the region's grassroots and elite sports. However, the condition of the facility has deteriorated in recent years – and the city has now decided: The Flomersheim Sports Field will be renovated.

Technical Condition and Need for Rehabilitation

The renovation is not only a sports policy initiative but also an urgently needed technical project. Expert assessments and inspection reports clearly show that the Flomersheim Sports Field no longer meets today's safety and playing standards. The drainage is inadequate, the surface is heavily overgrown with weeds, algae, and has a "soapy" texture. Furthermore, the goals lack tipping protection devices, which pose significant injury risks.

In 2025, comprehensive soil investigations were carried out, which showed that the grass root layer is below standard and the water permeability is insufficient. The administration concluded: A renovation can no longer be postponed.

Renovation Options: Artificial Turf as the Preferred Choice

The city of Frankenthal evaluated two renovation options:

  • Option 1: Artificial Turf
This approach was decided upon as technically and strategically appropriate. Artificial turf offers significant advantages over natural grass in terms of usability – especially during the winter months, when the current field cannot be used. In addition, the maintenance is considerably lower, which saves costs in the long term. The investment amounts to approximately 686,000 € gross.

  • Option 2: Natural Grass with Drainage Layer
Although cheaper (approximately 479,000 € gross), this option was put on hold as an alternative solution. The administration argues that the soil's technical condition is insufficient to guarantee long-term stability for natural grass.

The renovation of the Flomersheim Sports Field is planned as the second measure in the renovation plan – with construction scheduled to begin in 2028.

Funding and Financial Support

The renovation will be financed through the 2026 and 2027 budgets. In addition, the project is eligible for funding by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the framework of the "Golden Plan," with up to 50% of the costs potentially covered by state funds. This is a decisive factor in reducing costs for the city and making the project financially viable.

Outlook: Renovation as an Opportunity

The renovation of the Flomersheim Sports Field is not only a technical project but also a sports policy signal. It underlines the city of Frankenthal's commitment to modernizing its sports infrastructure and providing better conditions for clubs and the population. At the same time, the decision to use artificial turf shows that Frankenthal is betting on innovation and sustainability – not least at a time when the use of sports facilities is increasingly restricted by weather conditions.

The administration has already granted the planning authority for Option 1, and the next steps – from commissioning expert assessments to construction planning – are well underway. With the goal of completing the renovation by 2028, Frankenthal looks ahead optimistically – and toward a sports facility that will remain durable for the coming decades.
