Bodenheim commits to sustainable water management – March 2026 in focus

In March 2026, Bodenheim took several important steps towards sustainable water maintenance and renaturation. The Committee for Agriculture, Viticulture, and Environmental Protection intensely addressed the maintenance of third-order water bodies.

Bodenheim's Environmental Commitment: Focus on Water Maintenance in March 2026

The city of Bodenheim is implementing concrete measures in its environmental and climate policy to sustainably preserve ecological and landscape values. In March 2026, the maintenance and renaturation of third-order water bodies were particularly in focus. These water bodies, such as Graben B27 Mühlgraben or Graben N1 Eichelsbach, are not recorded in the public water network but play a crucial role in local biodiversity and groundwater retention.

Inspection and Planning: The Practice of Water Maintenance

On 7 March 2026, a public inspection took place as part of the meeting of the Committee for Agriculture, Viticulture, and Environmental Protection. The inspection started at the car park at the roundabout L413/Lange Ruthe and focused on seven relevant water sections, including Graben B27 Mühlgraben and Graben N1 Eichelsbach.

The inspection was part of the DZT flow plan, which ensures that the maintenance of third-order water bodies is carried out systematically and sustainably. The goal is to improve natural water flow, reduce pollutants, and promote habitats for animals and plants. The meeting took place from 09:00 to 11:42 and provided an opportunity for discussions on the current state of ditch maintenance and planning steps for future measures.

Renaturation as a Key Measure

A particularly relevant aspect was the renaturation work on Graben N1 Eichelsbach, especially in the area of NBG Hinter der Lehnsweide. Initial measures have already been implemented to make the ditch more natural. These include, for example, the removal of embankments, the restoration of watercourses, and the promotion of riparian vegetation. Such measures not only improve water quality but also stabilize the groundwater level and create habitats for amphibians, insects, and birds.

Outlook: Long-term Strategies for Water Maintenance

With the March inspection, the city of Bodenheim has set another milestone in its environmental strategy. The focus on third-order water bodies shows that the municipality is not only paying attention to major rivers and lakes but also includes smaller, often overlooked watercourses in its planning.

In the future, it is expected that further ditch sections will be inspected and renatured in a similar way. In addition, the development of a municipal ditch maintenance concept is planned, which will define long-term action areas and financing models. Such strategies are essential to cushion the effects of climate change at the regional level and to ensure the ecological stability of the region.
