Education Policy in the Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim: Full-Day Schools and Integrated Comprehensive School in Focus
In February 2026, the Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim focused on two landmark educational initiatives: the establishment of full-day schools in the form of extended services and the discussion of an Integrated Comprehensive School (IGS). Both projects aim to strengthen pedagogical orientation, promote social justice, and provide financial relief for families.
Education in Motion: Bodenheim Plans Full-Day Schools and IGS
In the Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim, education policy has clearly accelerated in February 2026. The School Board met on February 26 in Lörzweiler to discuss two central topics: the introduction of full-day schools in the form of extended services and the establishment of an Integrated Comprehensive School (IGS). Both initiatives reflect the municipality’s ambition to sustainably change the educational landscape while simultaneously improving the quality of life for families.
Full-Day Schools in Extended Services Form: Quality, Fairness, and Cost-Effectiveness
The BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN faction had already submitted a motion in late January 2026 for the establishment of full-day schools in extended services form at all four primary schools in the Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim. The idea behind this initiative is clear: to offer a qualified, structured after-school care program that is pedagogically valuable and financially relieving for families.
Currently, there are childcare offers in place, but they lack a unified pedagogical concept. Full-day schools in extended services form, on the other hand, provide continuous care with learning times, individual support, and social offerings. Parents benefit significantly, as they can save up to 2,592 euros per year – a substantial financial relief that also improves the compatibility of family and work life.
The cost of the after-school care is approximately 294,000 euros per year. Full-day schools are free for parents, except for the cost of lunch. The implementation process is being carried out in close coordination with the Supervisory and Service Directorate (ADD) and the Ministry of Education of Rhineland-Palatinate. A key milestone is the submission of a properly formatted and timely application by March 31, 2026, for the school year 2027/2028.
Integrated Comprehensive School (IGS): Equal Opportunities and Location Advantages
Alongside the discussion about full-day schools, the establishment of an Integrated Comprehensive School (IGS) was also a central topic. The School Board as well as the faction leaders of the Verbandsgemeinderat Bodenheim are calling for the founding of an IGS to cope with rising student numbers and to ensure a locally accessible educational offer.
The reasoning is clear: An IGS strengthens Bodenheim's attractiveness as a residential and educational location, promotes equal opportunities, and relieves existing school sites. At the same time, it can counter the trend of shifting student flows towards Nieder-Olm and Mainz.
According to the discussions, the Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim has suitable land, sports facilities, infrastructure, and good transport connections, which strongly support the feasibility of the IGS. The pedagogical concept of the IGS includes individual support, permeability between different educational tracks, and social integration – aspects that are increasingly in focus in today’s educational policy.
Outlook: An Educational Policy for the Future
The discussions and decision-making processes in February 2026 show that the Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim is ready to actively shape the educational landscape. Both the full-day schools in extended services form and the Integrated Comprehensive School are not only infrastructure projects, but expressions of a long-term educational initiative aimed at quality, fairness, and cost-effectiveness.
If these projects are successfully implemented, Bodenheim could become a model for other municipalities in the region – not only in terms of pedagogical orientation, but also in financial and social support for families. The coming months will show whether these ambitions can be translated into practice – and how these measures ultimately affect the quality of life of the citizens.
