Velbert Monthly Review: Inclusion, Finance, and Mobility in Focus

In March 2026, Velbert made progress in the areas of inclusion, financial planning, and transportation development. Here is the monthly overview for residents and interested parties.

Inclusion and Care – Velbert is Focusing on a Better Quality of Life

In March, Velbert saw significant developments in the field of social affairs and family policy. The Committee for Social Affairs, Family, and Seniors decided to create inclusive playgrounds in the parks of Herminghaus, Schloss Hardenberg, and at the old Pferdemarkt. The Technical Operations of Velbert AöR is to develop a concept with a concrete timeline, actively involving the city representative for people with disabilities, Lisa Weniger. The goal is to make playgrounds accessible to all children.

Additionally, the planning for the 7th Senior Center in Velbert-Birth was further specified. Operations are set to begin in 2026 and the center will be located at the Birther Kreisel. The operator, SKFM, has expressed its interest and is now seeking approval for funding from the district of Mettmann.

2026 Budget and Financial Planning: A Transparent Future

The Main and Finance Committee presented the draft budget for 2026 and the draft of the Financial Stability Concept for 2026–2035. The factions "Velbert anders" and UVB demanded a cap on the district contribution, with a transparent presentation of the consequences. Furthermore, the annual report of the Participating Administration Company mbH was presented, which showed a deficit of nearly 12 million euros.

Another topic was the review of a ban on fireworks on New Year’s Eve. The committee rejected the proposal, as the legal requirements were not met. Nevertheless, the discussion on noise reduction and safety remained on the agenda.

Rethinking Mobility: Transportation Development and Climate Protection

The Board of Directors of the Technical Operations of Velbert AöR made important decisions in March regarding transportation development. Pedestrian crossings at Am Kostenberg and Bartelskamp as well as the removal of a traffic light were approved. In addition, road renewal in accordance with the NRW Municipal Charges Act was approved.

The transportation development planning concept (VEP) was also further developed, with a focus on climate protection and modal split targets. Bike lanes, crossing aids, and bike parking facilities are key measures. Instead of a new strategic plan, concrete projects will be implemented in the future.
