Solingen Invests in Sustainable Childcare and Inclusive Education
In recent years, childcare in Solingen has undergone significant transformation. With a focus on climate protection, inclusion, and the reduction of social inequality, the city is actively working to provide children and young people with a secure and sustainable start in life. March 2026 was marked by decisions with long-term impacts on education, health, and social integration.
Sustainability and Climate Protection in Municipal Kindergartens
Kindergartens in Solingen are not only places of care, but also of education—and in recent years, also of climate protection initiatives. With a climate protection program running until 2028, all 18 municipal kindergartens are involved in the project. The goal is to continuously reduce energy consumption and actively involve children in the topics of sustainability and the environment.
Through a reward model, kindergartens receive financial incentives for environmentally friendly measures. Starting at 100 points, achieved through actions such as litter collection campaigns, rainwater and waste separation systems, kindergartens can receive up to €400 in rewards. These funds are reinvested into educational work and enable investments in sustainability projects.
The children themselves are not just passive participants, but active "Climate and Sustainability Detectives." They learn how they can change their lifestyle to protect the environment—a process embedded in morning circles and monthly energy reports.
Inclusion and Equal Opportunities—From Kindergarten to School
The city of Solingen is aware of the particular challenges faced by children with a migration background, disabilities, or from precarious living conditions. Social inequality and poverty shape the lives of many children and often have negative effects on education, health, and psychological stability.
Through the municipal Children and Youth Support Plan (KJFöP), Solingen promotes a holistic approach focused on empowerment, cultural education, and political participation. Particularly refugee children and young people need additional support to be integrated into society. Open youth work and inclusive leisure activities are essential in this context—they not only promote social contacts, but also language skills and self-confidence.
Young Carers, or underage caregivers, are another topic gaining attention in these discussions. They often take on responsibilities beyond their capacity and require specific support from the city.
Future-Ready Kindergartens Through Digital and Analog Participation
Digital participation is another focus of educational work. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds often use digital media only passively and have less access to educational resources. Solingen therefore offers low-threshold opportunities that enable both digital and analog participation. This is particularly important to prevent loneliness and to strengthen the democratic participation of young people.
The city also supports civic education and participation. Young people are calling for more say in urban development—and Solingen is responding. Through participation groups and youth councils, the city is trying to include young voices in decision-making processes. This is not only a democratic gain, but also a key to social integration.
Outlook: Solingen as a Model City for Sustainable and Inclusive Education
The decisions of March 2026 show that Solingen is positioning itself as a pioneer in childcare. With a strong focus on sustainability, inclusion, and the reduction of social inequality, the city is not only implementing short-term measures, but aiming for long-term change. The combination of climate protection, social care, and democratic education makes Solingen a city where children and young people have opportunities—regardless of their origin, social background, or health situation.
