Solingen April 2026: Urban Development in Focus – From Picnic Areas to Road Construction

In Solingen, temperatures are rising, along with activities in urban planning: From new picnic areas through renovation programs to construction planning – April 2026 marks a significant breakthrough in urban development.

Urban Development in Solingen: Diverse Projects and Future Visions

In April 2026, Solingen entered an exciting chapter in its urban development. Numerous projects came into focus, influencing both the daily lives of citizens and long-term planning and sustainability. Topics ranged from the establishment of new picnic areas, through comprehensive road construction measures, to the re-planning of zoning plans. These initiatives demonstrate how actively and future-oriented the city is in shaping its development.

Picnic Areas: A Response to Usage Conflicts

The creation of new picnic areas in Gräfrath, Mitte, Ohligs/Aufderhöhe/Merscheid, and Burg/Höhscheid was a central topic. The goal was to regulate the use of sensitive green spaces while simultaneously promoting leisure activities for citizens. Four locations – Bärenloch, Volksgarten, Bülowplatz, and Stiehls Teich – were selected based on fire protection and nature conservation criteria. The provision of fixed grills, benches, and waste containers is intended to enable controlled use.

The costs for the establishment of the picnic areas amount to approximately 88,900 euros, with annual follow-up costs of about 54,930 euros. As these funds are not included in the budget, compensation is still required. The decision was made in the district councils, and the financing is currently under consideration. These measures show how the city responds to local needs while also protecting the balance between leisure and nature.

Road Construction and Maintenance: Long-Term Investments

Another central project was the Pavement and Sidewalk Program 2026. A total of 26 road sections were planned for renovation. This is an investment in the future, with a planned remaining service life of about 20 years. The renovations include milling off the old wearing course and applying a new asphalt layer.

Special attention was given to the reduction of noise emissions through the use of noise-reducing asphalt. These measures not only contribute to the improvement of road quality but also support the expansion of cycling through smooth road surfaces and protected cycle lanes. With a budget of 2.2 million euros, the program is a clear indication of the prioritization of infrastructure and sustainability in Solingen.

Urban Planning: The Future of the City in Detail

Urban development in Solingen is not only focused on the present but also on the future. An example is Zoning Plan D 146 – Part A, which affects the area northwest of Eichenstraße and southwest of Kiebitzweg. The preparation of the zoning plan was carried out in accordance with § 2 (1) of the German Building Code (BauGB), and the accelerated planning procedure (§ 13a BauGB) was applied to advance the planning process promptly.

Public participation, as required by § 3 (1) BauGB, is a decisive step in the planning process. It allows the needs of citizens to be included and potential conflicts to be identified early. This transparent approach strengthens public trust in municipal planning.

Bridge Construction and Infrastructure: Safety and Progress

The new bridge construction at Haasenmühle is another project that was discussed in April 2026. The status report showed that the new bridge is necessary to replace the existing, renovated bridge with a new structure. The aim is to ensure traffic flow and infrastructure in the region in the long term.

This measure is part of a comprehensive infrastructure approach that places safety and progress in the foreground. It underlines how important it is to not only preserve existing structures but also to improve them deliberately.

Outlook: A City in Transition

April 2026 has shown in Solingen how diverse and dynamic urban development can be. Whether in the design of recreational areas, the renovation of infrastructure, or the planning of future developments – each measure contributes to making the city more livable and sustainable.

Current planning is not only focused on the present but also on the future. Through early public involvement, transparent decision-making processes, and investments in infrastructure, Solingen has set the right course. In the coming months, it will be exciting to observe how these projects develop further and what new initiatives emerge in the city.
