Education and Public Facilities in Neukirchen-Vluyn: Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

Education and public facilities form the foundation of a livable city. In March 2026, Neukirchen-Vluyn addressed a range of issues that influence both the current situation and future developments. The Committee for Social Affairs, Education, Culture, Sports, and Equality reported on progress in school development, modernization projects, and work in educational institutions. At the same time, challenges were also identified – from infrastructure deficiencies in the sports hall to the search for a new location for a youth center.

Progress in School Development

The modernization of Niederberg Comprehensive School is a milestone in the city's educational policy. Construction and renovation work has already been in full swing since November 2025. The planned move of the school to the new facilities is scheduled for early January 2027. In addition, the purchase of the currently rented container facilities was decided, providing long-term planning security – albeit with additional costs due to construction delays.

Work on extending the number of classes is also underway at Antonius School and Gerhard-Tersteegen School I. The expansion projects began in November 2025, and the work is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. This is particularly important to accommodate the growing number of students. For the academic year 2026/2027, eleven first-grade classes were established – a number that is expected to rise to twelve classes by 2027/28.

Educational Institutions and Their Role in the Community

The Adult Education Center (Volkshochschule, VHS) Krefeld/Neukirchen-Vluyn presented its 2026 program in March 2026. With digital offerings such as a new website and the discontinuation of the printed program, the VHS is focusing on modern communication. At the same time, the VHS continues to target women aged 40 to 65 years – a demographic particularly affected by digitalization efforts.

The youth center Klingerhuf also reported on its activities. With offerings such as painting, crafting, cooking, and dance classes, as well as social projects like the youth café, the center promotes social participation. In 2025, events such as the "Creative Night" and day trips were held. For 2026, a stronger focus on sports is planned – a step intended to engage young people more effectively.

Challenges and Open Questions

Despite the progress, challenges remain. The search for a suitable location for a youth center in the Terniepenweg housing estate is still ongoing. A ground-floor apartment is a prerequisite for the setup – so far, no suitable properties have been found. In addition, issues with the Jahnstraße sports hall were discussed: protruding screws, low temperatures during gymnastics events, and poor air quality. These deficiencies could affect the use of the hall and must therefore be urgently addressed.

An investment project is also underway at the Diesterwegstraße daycare facility. The work, which has been carried out since October 2025 while the facility remains in operation, is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2026. The goal is to make the premises barrier-free and child-friendly.

A Look to the Future

The city of Neukirchen-Vluyn is actively working on the future of education and public facilities. With investments in schools, youth centers, and libraries, a clear effort is being made to meet the needs of the population. At the same time, the city remains sensitive to challenges – whether in infrastructure, digitalization, or the search for new spaces.

Even though not all projects are proceeding smoothly, there is a strong political will to improve the educational landscape of the city. With the goal of creating a modern, inclusive, and affordable educational infrastructure by 2027, Neukirchen-Vluyn looks forward to an exciting future.
