Urban Planning and Housing: The New District Wiesenstraße
In February 2026, a milestone was reached in Lüdenscheid's urban planning: The Zoning Plan No. 843 for the "Wiesenstraße" area was adopted. The former industrial site is being transformed into a residential zone (WA), expected to accommodate up to 700–800 new residents. At the heart of the plan is a Netto supermarket with 799 m² of retail space, built in combination with 18 residential units.
In addition to retail, social and infrastructural elements are planned: a daycare center, a playground, a community space, and a new pedestrian connection between Obertinsberg, Wiesenstraße, and Kampstraße. The roof design is set to flat roofs with mandatory greenery, and provisions are made for tree planting and bike and car parking spaces.
The zoning plan still needs to be approved by the district government of Arnsberg, ideally by late 2025. Citizens can review the plans publicly and submit suggestions, which is possible until the end of March 2026.
Traffic and Public Life: Open Sunday and Emergency Services
Another focus was the approval of the open shopping Sunday on May 10, 2026. As part of the event "Spring in the City", the city center will be animated with a street food festival, an auto show, a go-kart track, and a children's program. Sales outlets may be open between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM – outside of this time, a strict sales and consultation ban applies. Violations can result in fines up to €5,000.
Additionally, the ambulance fee was fixed at €538.01. This fee is fully forwarded to the Märkischer Kreis and is now legally established. The decision was discussed in several committees and passed unanimously.
Sport and Infrastructure: Renovations and New Construction
In the field of sports and leisure, Lüdenscheid also made progress. The renovation of the LüWo-Arena is well advanced: The artificial turf has been renewed, the goal net fence is installed, and the running track will be tendered again in 2026. Completion is planned for early 2026.
In Nattenberg, the first three mountain bike trails have been opened. A comprehensive concept for the development of further routes is planned for autumn 2025. In addition, the gymnasium of Hauptschule Stadtpark will be closed for renovation work after the 2026 summer holidays. The work will be carried out in parallel with the renovations of the gymnasiums at the Zeppelin-Gymnasium and the Grundschule Tinsberg, both of which are expected to be completed by the end of the 2026 summer holidays.
For physical education at Hauptschule Stadtpark, a reorganization is required. The school will temporarily relocate to the gymnasium of the LIBZ, particularly affecting basketball activities. Close coordination is maintained with the club Baskets Lüdenscheid.
Overview and Outlook
February 2026 was a month of strategic progress for Lüdenscheid: Not only were concrete urban development plans adopted, but infrastructure and sports facilities were also further developed. Public participation remains a central aspect – it allows citizens to influence the development of their city.
In the coming weeks and months, the focus will be on the approval of the zoning plan, the implementation of renovation work, and the preparation of the open shopping Sunday. In addition, further committee meetings and citizen forums can be expected to inform about the next steps.
Conclusion and Outlook
February has shown that Lüdenscheid is on the right path – with clear planning, future-oriented projects, and transparent decision-making. The implementation of the adopted measures will be crucial in the coming months. Citizens are warmly invited to actively participate and help shape the development of their city.
