Essen is betting on Greentech and Economic Transformation – March 2026 in Focus
In March 2026, the city of Essen took decisive steps in economic development, focusing on Greentech, energy innovation, and international cooperation. In this article, we analyze the background, decisions, and long-term effects of these initiatives.
Essen as a Greentech Hub: Economic Development in March 2026
The city of Essen has set a clear course in the March 2026 session of the Main, Finance, and Economy Committee: moving away from traditional industrial structures toward a knowledge-based, climate-friendly economy. With a wide range of projects and collaborations, the city has demonstrated its ambitions as a central player in the German and international Greentech sector.
Economic Promotion and Settlement Strategy
A central project is the targeted settlement of climate-friendly companies in Essen. The Essen Economic Society (EWG) coordinates this initiative, which will cost around 856,250 EUR until 2029. It is funded from the SECAP budget and the Green Capital Agency.
Between 2024 and 2025, important foundations were laid: an international contact database with 1,915 entries, a network of 45 partner organizations, and the development of infrastructure. In total, 23 international applications were received, of which three companies are currently in the strategy check. Financial support is only provided after a binding settlement decision is made, indicating a structured and sustainable settlement strategy.
Incubator for Climate Tech Start-ups
Another milestone is the establishment of an Energy-Tech Hub in Essen, which will cost around 1.6 million EUR until 2029. The goal is to support Climate Tech start-ups by providing them with consulting services, working spaces, infrastructure, and networking with investors and customers. Project partners include, for example, BRYCK, GUIDE (UDE), H2UB, and others.
The city is also using external platforms to increase its visibility: events such as the E-World 2024/2025 and initiatives like the BRYCK Energy Booster with 15 teams contribute to international networking. Another highlight is the scholarship program "Upscaler Academy," which supports start-ups specifically.
International Cooperation and Networks
Essen has established itself as an active partner in the international Greentech network. Partner organizations in countries such as Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom contribute to identifying potential cooperation partners. A LinkedIn campaign with 1.5 million impressions and targeted searches for companies and decision-makers have helped increase awareness.
Delegation trips, such as to the Greater Manchester Germany Innovation Summit or the Tokyo–NRW SME Partnership, as well as receptions of U.S. delegations, show how strongly Essen is integrated into the international Greentech scene. In total, 23 companies have been identified, three of which are currently in the strategy check.
Funding and Strategic Planning
All decisions regarding economic promotion are financially secured. Thus, funding is only granted after a binding settlement decision is made, which minimizes risks and demands responsibility. The city also plans to expand its partner network and increase its presence at international professional events.
The SECAP strategy is integrated into various projects, including the incubator and the settlement program. The coordination of these projects is crucial for the long-term stability and effectiveness of the measures.
Conclusion: Essen as a Pioneer in the Climate Transition
In March 2026, Essen has shown that it is not only a historically industrial city but also actively contributing to the future of energy and economic development. With targeted investments in Greentech, international cooperation, and innovative support programs, the city has set a clear course. This strategy will not only strengthen the local economy but also contribute to climate neutrality.
