April in Essen: Traffic, Inclusion, and Youth Participation in Focus
In Essen, the April is marked by traffic projects, new regulations for citizen centers, and a strong focus on inclusion and youth participation. Find out what has been moving the city in recent weeks.
Traffic and Mobility on the Move
Important Decisions of April 2026
- The Committee for Traffic and Mobility decided on the start of road resurfacing construction in Gönterstraße and Wolfskuhle.
- A redesign of the intersection at Amixstraße / Helenenstraße / Husmannshofstraße was approved in order to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
- The major timetable change on 14 June 2026 was noted by several committees.
- In the district committee V, a new zoning plan for Vogelheimer Straße was passed, enabling the development of a combined building with a daycare center and residential space.
Youth Participation and New Regulations for Citizen Centers
The Youth Welfare Committee passed new usage and fee regulations for several citizen centers during its fourth meeting. These regulations will take effect from 1 July 2026 and, among other things, allow for the free use of rooms for non-commercial events with a focus on youth culture.
In addition, the Prevention Initiative for Ages 12 and Up was expanded in order to strengthen young people up to the transition into professional life. The funding amounts to 477,700 € for 2026 and is distributed according to the quota key of the Essen Youth Working Group.
Inclusion and New Perspectives
The Inclusion Advisory Board decided on the appointment of Mr. Gorden Bringemeier as an alternate member and set the revision of its bylaws. In addition, several reports were reviewed, including the report according to § 10b SGB VIII and the Final Report on Integrated Sports Development Planning (ISEP).
Another important topic was the evaluation of implementation measures in the steep slope forests, where the effectiveness of existing measures was confirmed. For untreated areas, timely implementation is recommended from a professional standpoint.
Open Sunday Shopping and a New Sports Delegate
In the district committee IX, a sports delegate was appointed, and eight projects were subsidized with a total amount of 2,350 €. In addition, two open Sunday shopping days were approved: on 6 September 2026 in Essen-Borbeck and on 13 September 2026 in Essen-Kupferdreh.
Liaison Members and Youth Participation
In the district committee III, liaison members for the Integration Council were elected. In addition, a new concept for youth participation in Essen was developed, including the establishment of a youth participation service center in the city center. The goal is to set up a youth self-representation, which acts independently of the city administration and can make its own decisions on which topics it wishes to take a position.
Outlook for May 2026
April 2026 in Essen was characterized by practical decisions in the field of traffic, new regulations for citizen centers, and strong steps towards inclusion and youth participation. In May, the focus will be primarily on the implementation of the approved projects, as well as the preparation of the timetable change in June. In addition, the youth self-representation in the Essen city center will be implemented step by step.
