Climate and Environment in Düsseldorf: April 2026 in Focus

In April 2026, Düsseldorf focused on a range of measures in the areas of climate and environment. From promoting e-mobility and the renaturation of public green spaces to climate adaptation in urban planning – the district committees made sustainable and forward-looking decisions.

Environment and Climate in April 2026: Düsseldorf Implements Sustainable Measures

The topics of climate and environment have continued to gain in importance in Düsseldorf. In the district committee meetings in April 2026, numerous initiatives and projects were approved that aim to strengthen sustainability and improve the city's climate resilience. From the promotion of e-mobility to the renaturation of green spaces – the city is implementing a broad package of measures that are both ecologically and socially sound.

Climate Adaptation and Biodiversity: Investments in the Future

A central theme was climate adaptation in urban planning. Düsseldorf is systematically investing in measures that strengthen biodiversity and at the same time cushion the effects of climate change. The budget for 2022–2026 allocated 5 million euros annually for climate protection measures, with an increase of 1 million euros already implemented in 2025.

In the so-called Action Package A, 3.5 million euros were invested to plant trees and develop blue-green infrastructure. A total of 1,612 trees were newly planted, and 53,202 forest plants were used. In addition, the city supports green roofs and façades, which not only add aesthetic value but also improve thermal insulation and thus save energy.

Another project in focus was the Pocket Park Albertstraße, which will receive 900,000 euros in funding. It is intended not only to create an oasis for city dwellers but also to serve as an educational site for climate protection. Another highlight is the Green Corridor Aaper Wald, which will be funded with 3.858 million euros and strengthens biodiversity in the surrounding areas of Düsseldorf.

E-Mobility and Transport Policy: Momentum for the Future

The promotion of e-mobility also played a central role. A proposal was accepted to change the parking regulations at charging stations. From 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, vehicles should be allowed to park even without an active charging process. This measure is aligned with the favorable charging conditions at night and is intended to support the expansion of the charging infrastructure.

In addition, Düsselbike stations were established in several districts. In district 8, 5 new stations will be created with a total of 2,500 rental bikes. The city is thus promoting a modern and environmentally friendly mobility solution that is particularly attractive for commuters and tourists.

Green Spaces and Renaturation: Düsseldorf is Becoming Greener

The renaturation of public green spaces and the creation of new flowering areas are further priorities. For example, 54 flower pots were installed in district 8, funded by the association Pro Düsseldorf and the district committee. In addition, the meadow flower strategy is being continued to strengthen biodiversity in urban areas. On municipal land, the grass strip along roads was widened from 1 meter to 2 meters to create more habitat for insects.

Another project is the conversion of Rhine foreland farmland into green space-like areas. This measure supports local flora and fauna and also provides more open space for the population. In addition, glyphosate was completely avoided on nearly 100% of the city's agricultural land, further reducing the city's ecological footprint.

STADTRADELN 2026: Düsseldorf Mobilizes for Climate Protection

Another highlight was Düsseldorf's participation in the nationwide STADTRADELN 2026, a competition to promote cycling. The city of Düsseldorf actively participated and launched marketing activities such as flyers, posters, and social media. Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller took on the role of team captain for the city administration.

In 2025, an impressive 1,382,100 kilometers were already cycled by 7,122 cyclists – a performance that is expected to be exceeded in 2026 as well. STADTRADELN is not only a competition but also a means of raising awareness of sustainable mobility and climate protection.

Conclusion: Düsseldorf on Course for a Climate-Resilient Future

The decisions made in Düsseldorf in April 2026 show that the city is actively responding to the challenges of climate change. From the promotion of e-mobility and the renaturation of green spaces to climate adaptation in urban planning – Düsseldorf is implementing a broad and forward-looking package of measures. The investments in biodiversity, green infrastructure, and sustainable mobility clearly show that the city is ready to ensure a climate-resilient future.
