Düsseldorf's Sports Policy in March 2026: Inclusion, Digitalization, and Investments in Sports Infrastructure
In March 2026, Düsseldorf sets new standards with a range of sports policy initiatives – from inclusive sports offerings to large-scale investments in sports facilities and digitalization projects.
Düsseldorf's Sports Policy in March 2026: An Overview
Düsseldorf has established itself in recent years as a city with a broad range of sports offerings and an inclusive orientation. In March 2026, it becomes evident that this development is not only continuing but also being strategically deepened. The city is investing in new sports infrastructure, promoting digital access, and focusing on inclusion and diversity – three central themes that shape the sports policy decisions of the month.
Inclusion and Queer-Friendliness in the Spotlight
A central topic is the promotion of inclusive and queer-friendly sports offerings. The parliamentary group DIE LINKE. Düsseldorf successfully campaigned for the creation of a new funding fund amounting to 100,000 euros. In addition, the already reduced sports funding of 148,078 euros is to be restored. The goal is to support sports clubs in creating discrimination-free spaces, particularly through the renovation of changing and sanitary facilities that are accessible to people with disabilities and members of the LGBTIQA+ community.
This decision reflects a growing societal need, as well as a clear stance by the city to actively promote diversity and equality in sports. At the same time, a new instrument is emerging that directly supports sports clubs in implementing their inclusion goals.
Investments in Sports Infrastructure: Multi-Sports Facilities and Dirt Parks
Düsseldorf is making significant investments in the future of its sports infrastructure. A milestone is the construction of the barrier-free multi-sports facility "Sport for All" on Redinghovenstraße. With more than 500,000 euros in planning funds and a target start date for the project, this is a strategic building block for urban development. The facility will not only be used for mass and recreational sports, but will also offer ecological benefits through biodiversity and climate neutrality.
Another project decided on in March is the dirt park on Pariser Straße in Heerdt. With a total grant of one million euros (2026 and 2027), mountain biking will be strengthened in Düsseldorf. The Mountain Biking Association e.V. is closely involved in the planning and will operate the facility as a "semi-public facility." The aim is to enable the sport to be practiced safely and in a nature-friendly way – a good combination of club efforts and municipal support.
Digitalization and Expansion of Offerings
Another focus of the month is digitalization. With a budget proposal of 20,000 euros, the "Sports in the Park" program will be further digitized. The goal is to make the program more accessible to a broader audience while also using resources more efficiently. This is a step toward a modernized sports policy that also considers digital access and user-friendliness.
Outlook: Düsseldorf's Sports Policy in 2026
March 2026 shows that Düsseldorf is following a clear sports policy line: investing in modern, inclusive, and diverse sports offerings that are attractive to both children and young people, as well as adults and specific population groups. At the same time, digitalization is recognized as a key issue to better spread and make sports offerings more accessible.
The coming months will show whether these decisions can be implemented in practice – and whether they actually have a long-term positive effect on the sports culture in Düsseldorf. The city is moving in the right direction, but the sustainability and broad impact of these measures remain to be observed.
