Düsseldorf is Investing in Sustainable Sports – April 2026 in Focus

In April 2026, Düsseldorf will demonstrate how sports and sustainability can go hand in hand. Numerous sports clubs and initiatives are benefiting from municipal subsidies and are focusing on photovoltaics, e-mobility, and climate-friendly events.

How Düsseldorf Combines Sports and Climate Protection

In April 2026, Düsseldorf demonstrated that the city is not only progressing culturally and economically, but is also playing a pioneering role in the fields of sports and sustainability. Numerous sports clubs and projects received support from the Sports Committee in this month in order to implement energy-efficient measures, build climate-friendly sports facilities, or organize international sports events with an ecological focus.

The city supports not only athletic performance, but also ecological responsibility. Particularly noteworthy are the investments in photovoltaic systems, heat pumps, and e-mobility, which are being implemented in many sports clubs. At the same time, large-scale youth sports events are also supported to strengthen youth development and international exchange.

Energy-Efficient Sports Facilities: Photovoltaics in the Forefront

In April 2026, the Sports Committee approved several million euros in subsidies for sports clubs to advance the transition to renewable energy. Particularly striking is the support for photovoltaic installations.

For example, the Düsseldorfer Turn- und Sportverein Fortuna 1895 e.V. received a grant of 70,000 EUR for a PV system with a capacity of 99.9 kWp at the youth performance center in Flingern. The system will produce about 85,000 kWh of electricity annually and ensure 26% energy self-sufficiency. This is a milestone for the club, which is actively contributing to Düsseldorf's goal of climate neutrality by 2035.

The Boston-Club Düsseldorf e.V. and the Tennisclub Benrath 1912 e.V. also benefit from municipal support. The Boston-Club is investing in a PV system with a capacity of 30,000 kWp and an expected self-sufficiency rate of 61%. The Tennisclub Benrath plans to adapt its electrical system for the operation of a heat pump and a photovoltaic system.

These measures show how Düsseldorf is making sports sustainable not only in terms of performance, but also in terms of infrastructure.

International Sports Events with a Youth Focus

Another highlight of April was the support for international youth sports events. For example, the Düsseldorfer Sport-Club 1899 e.V. is organizing the 16th International Youth Pentecost Tournament, in which 32 teams from Germany and the Netherlands will participate. The club is receiving a grant of 10,000 EUR for this.

The Goju-Ryu Karate Verein Garath e.V. is also supported with 10,000 EUR to host the 8th International Düsseldorf Cup. Around 800–1,000 athletes and 1,000–1,400 spectators are expected to attend.

These events not only contribute to youth development, but also strengthen international exchange and the sports culture in Düsseldorf.

Promotion of Youth Elite Sports

Düsseldorf is also placing greater emphasis on youth elite sports. The Inline- and Skaterhockey Club Düsseldorf RAMS ’87 e.V. has been newly added to the Elite Sports Support Master Plan and will receive an annual grant of 2,500 EUR starting in 2026.

The funding is subject to clear criteria: At least 75% of the funds must be used for elite sports personnel, and the club must actively participate in projects such as CHECK’D and the NRW Sports School.

At the same time, the DJK Agon 08 Mörsenbroicher Sport-Verein e.V. is promoting youth athletics in cooperation with Düsseldorf Athletics. The club also plans to create a full-time position to relieve voluntary engagement and further develop youth sports.

Outlook and Challenges

The April decisions show how Düsseldorf is shaping sports in a future-oriented way. The combination of sustainability, youth development, and international orientation makes the city an attractive location for sports clubs and initiatives.

However, funding remains a topic. Many events and investments are only possible due to municipal subsidies. Therefore, the city must ensure in the coming years that its support policy remains stable and can respond to increasing demand.

At the same time, digitalization and the expansion of sports databases are crucial to making elite sports support transparent and efficient.

Düsseldorf has shown in April 2026 that it is possible to combine sports and sustainability. The coming months will show whether this pioneering role can be maintained in the future.
