Childcare in Dortmund: Expansion, Investments, and Local Initiatives in April 2026
In April 2026, Dortmund set new standards in childcare. With a strategic expansion plan until 2035, investments in local facilities, and a focus on child traffic safety, important steps were taken to improve early childhood care.
Expansion of Childcare: A Central Priority
In April 2026, Dortmund reached another milestone in the strategic expansion of childcare. With the approved plan until 2035, the focus is on ensuring a coverage rate of at least 60 percent for children under three years of age. The city thus commits itself to sustainably guaranteeing the legal entitlement to childcare and reducing social inequality through early childhood education and care.
The financial framework is ambitious: Additional costs in the millions are planned by 2029. However, these are not included in the 2025/2026 budget plans, which means the expansion is financially oriented toward future years. This shows the city's long-term planning approach, which, however, also comes with challenges such as financing and implementation in practice.
Local Initiatives and Investments in Eving
Concrete steps have been taken in the district of Eving to improve the quality of local childcare. The parent initiative Sonnenkinderhaus e.V. applied for funding of 8,700 euros for renovation work and the purchase of new furniture. The goal is to optimize the premises so that they meet the quality requirements of modern childcare.
The initiative is an example of how civic engagement in Dortmund shapes the local educational and care landscape. The support from the district administration underlines the importance of such projects for urban development and shows that investments in the infrastructure of childcare centers also have a high priority even in financially difficult times.
Traffic Safety for Children: A Central Area of Responsibility
In addition to structural investments in childcare facilities, issues of traffic safety were also in focus. In the Holthausen area, concerns were raised about improving traffic conditions for children, particularly in 30 km/h zones. Children and elderly residents are particularly at risk there, leading to discussions about measures such as better lighting, structural protection, and traffic calming.
Another example is the change in the no-stopping regulation at the Elisabeth Elementary School in Eving. A no-parking sign is to be installed there to prevent long-term parking, while short-term stopping for boarding and alighting is to remain permitted. This is a pragmatic approach to enable parents to safely drop off and pick up their children without further worsening the traffic situation.
Education and Infrastructure: Challenges in School Planning
The expansion plan for childcare is closely linked to the educational infrastructure. In Eving, 18 trainees were needed for the school year 2026/2027, but only 17 were available. This shows that the planning of educational facilities is closely linked to population forecasts and childcare planning. Parents, students, and teachers are affected by the uncertainty surrounding the construction of the new Brechten Elementary School. The CDU faction criticized the lack of transparency and progress in planning, indicating the need for a better communication strategy.
Conclusion: Investments, Safety, and Transparency as Key Issues
April 2026 was marked by clear impulses in childcare in Dortmund. The strategic expansion plan until 2035, investments in local initiatives, as well as the improvement of traffic safety and the planning of educational facilities show that the city is actively committed to the future viability of its childcare and education landscape. At the same time, the challenge remains to implement these plans financially and organizationally, as well as to transparently and sustainably involve citizens.
