Dinslaken Invests in Leaf Baskets: Focusing on Eco-Friendly Waste Management

In February 2026, climate protection and the preservation of the city's greenery were at the forefront of discussions in Dinslaken. The introduction of leaf baskets has become a central topic in public debate.

Environmental and Climate Protection in Dinslaken: Challenges and New Approaches

In an era of increasing climate threats and greater awareness of sustainability, Dinslaken is intensifying its focus on measures in the areas of environment and climate. The city is pursuing a pragmatic approach that considers both ecological benefits and practical implementation while taking the budgetary situation into account. A central topic in the February discussions was the introduction of leaf baskets, a pilot project with far-reaching implications for the city's environmental policy.

Background of the Leaf Basket Debate

The introduction of leaf baskets in Dinslaken is part of a broader effort to make leaf disposal more sustainable and efficient. The motion proposed by the UBV faction on January 31, 2025, laid the foundation for a pilot phase beginning in autumn 2025. The goal is to collect fallen street leaves in special leaf baskets in order to reduce environmental pollution and at the same time minimize safety risks such as slippery sidewalks or clogged drains.

The idea is not new: Other cities already use leaf basket systems. However, experience shows that such projects are not without challenges. In Dinslaken, incorrect filling, technical malfunctions, and additional cleaning efforts have already caused an initial trial run to fail. In addition, costs are a central focus – investments for procurement, storage, vehicles, and personnel could amount to several hundred thousand euros.

Benefits and Risks of the Introduction

The city of Dinslaken emphasizes that it already has an established leaf collection system based on leaf vacuum trucks and sweeping machines. The introduction of leaf baskets would therefore not replace the existing system, but complement it. The benefits are clear: Sustainability through composting, fewer contaminants in the sewer system, and a cleaner cityscape.

At the same time, the risks should not be underestimated. Experiences from other municipalities show that space competition often arises and the systems are often not used sufficiently. In addition, additional costs are incurred, which are assessed particularly critically in the current budget situation. Therefore, another test run is not considered to be a promising approach – instead, a concept with an information campaign is to be developed, which will accompany the pilot phase in a structured manner.

Outlook: Sustainability in Urban Life

The pilot phase starting in autumn 2025 will therefore be a crucial milestone. It is specifically aimed at districts with sufficient tree cover and enough space to place the leaf baskets. The criteria for selecting the sites are strict: Accessibility, space requirements, and a clear distinction from private waste (e.g., green waste) are decisive.

In the long term, the project could help position Dinslaken as a sustainable and climate-friendly city. If it succeeds in exciting citizens for the system while at the same time overcoming technical and financial challenges, the success could lead to follow-up in other areas of environmental policy – whether in reducing pollutants, promoting green spaces or raising awareness of environmentally friendly waste disposal.
