Bottrop: Prosperstraße Railway Overpass – Traffic Planning in Focus
In April 2026, the railway overpass at Prosperstraße in Bottrop will be in focus. Deutsche Bahn plans to dismantle and replace four bridge structures in four construction phases starting in December 2026. This deep-dive analyzes the planning, the traffic impacts, and the municipal decision-making processes.
Traffic Planning in Bottrop: Prosperstraße Railway Overpass 2026
The Prosperstraße in Bottrop is a central traffic corridor playing a key role for motorized traffic, public transport, and cycling. At the end of 2026, the comprehensive renovation of the railway overpass at this location will begin, during which four bridge structures of Deutsche Bahn will be dismantled and replaced with new ones. The construction project will be carried out in four phases over a total period of 24 months.
Construction Planning and Traffic Impacts
The construction phases are closely interlinked and affect both the infrastructure of the railway overpass as well as road and sewer structures. In the first two phases (demolition and insertion of the structures), a full closure of the Prosperstraße between the intersections with Ostring/Devensstraße and Knappenstraße is planned. The third phase focuses on the construction of excavation retaining walls, while the fourth phase (8 weeks) includes road construction.
Phases 2 and 4 are particularly critical, as the junction of Prosperstraße/Knappenstraße will be fully closed during these periods. Deutsche Bahn has commissioned an engineering firm to examine possible detours for motorized traffic, public transport, as well as pedestrians and cyclists. The goal is to keep traffic disruptions as low as possible, especially for businesses in the adjacent industrial areas.
Synergies between the City and the Railway
The construction project is being carried out in synergy with the city of Bottrop, which should enable efficiency and cost savings. Deutsche Bahn and the city of Bottrop have decided to award the construction project to a single construction company responsible for all trades. This reduces coordination efforts and accelerates the construction phases.
The total construction period is planned for 24 months, with Phases 2 and 4 being particularly long-term, planned for 17 and 8 weeks of construction time, respectively. The use of SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transporter) in the second construction phase is a technologically advanced approach to carry out the insertion work precisely and safely.
Communication and Public Participation
The city of Bottrop has planned clear measures to inform the population. On April 16, 2026, a joint session of the Committee for Construction and Traffic as well as the district committees for Bottrop-Süd and Bottrop-Mitte will take place, during which a draft of a detour concept will be presented. After this session, an information event for the affected businesses is planned.
In addition, the city will set up its own website where residents can inform themselves about the progress of the construction site, detours, and current developments. These measures represent a clear step towards transparent and participatory traffic planning.
Outlook: Challenges and Opportunities
The railway overpass at Prosperstraße is not only a technical challenge but also a planning task with far-reaching consequences. The full closures during the construction phases will affect traffic flow in Bottrop, but the long-term benefits from the renewal of the infrastructure and the safety improvements are undeniable.
The cooperation between the city and the railway as well as the early involvement of the population show that Bottrop is actively shaping the future of mobility – with a clear focus on sustainability, safety, and traffic flow.
