Climate and Environment in Bochum: Between Greening, Tree Felling, and Fireworks Debate
In January 2026, decisions on climate and environmental policy were at the center of attention in Bochum. From greening projects and tree felling to discussions about fireworks bans – the city is implementing sustainable measures, while criticism and debates continue.
Greening, Felling, and Fireworks: Bochum's Environmental Debates in January 2026
The climate and environmental debate in Bochum continued on multiple levels in January 2026. Whether in the form of greening projects, tree felling, or discussions about fireworks bans – the city is positioning itself as an active player in addressing the challenges of the climate crisis. At the same time, it becomes clear that the implementation of ambitious climate protection goals is not possible without resistance and criticism.
Greening as a Climate Protection Measure
A central measure in Bochum's climate protection strategy is the greening of bus stops. Since 2022, the city has gradually implemented green bus stops, which are not only visually appealing but also offer ecological benefits. Each stop can green approximately 7 m² and retain up to 140 liters of rainwater. A total of 40 stops are planned between 2022 and 2029.
As of January 2026, seven stops have already been greened in Bochum, Gelsenkirchen, and Witten. The goal is to include three new stops in the project each year. The measure is part of a comprehensive strategy for urban climate optimization and rainwater management. It demonstrates how small, decentralized measures can make a significant contribution to climate protection.
Tree Felling and Protection of Old Trees
In the context of forest and tree care, Bochum is facing criticism. For 2025/2026, 555 trees in parks and green spaces, 126 street trees, and 65 cemetery trees are planned for felling. The reasons include fungal infestation, rot, instability, and storm damage. At the same time, the city plans to plant over 650 new trees.
Critics, however, point to the lack of transparency in the decision-making process. Expert reports, alternatives, and participation processes often remain unclear. Particularly the felling case at the Walter-Lohmann-Ring, where 34 trees were cut down without political decision-making, sparked intense debate. The question of whether nature conservation regulations were followed remains unresolved.
To stabilize the urban forest, 55.4 hectares of thinning work are also planned. The focus is on the protection of old tree stands and habitat trees. Suggestions such as tree sponsorship programs or increasing the staff strength in the environmental department are being discussed to strengthen citizen participation.
Fireworks Ban: A Debate on Climate and Culture
The discussion about a municipal fireworks ban gained momentum again in January 2026. A proposal for a ban under § 24 (2) sentence 1 No. 1 of the 1st SprengV was rejected by the Committee for Safety, Environment, and Sustainability. Reason: A local ban would not be sufficient; a national ban on the sale of pyrotechnics is required.
The justification for the ban is air pollution from fine particles, noise pollution, animal stress, and waste problems. The climate check rated the project at 25% climate relevance and recommended no further measures. Instead, the administration advocated for professional laser and drone shows as environmentally friendly alternatives.
The rejection of the proposal shows how difficult it is to reconcile culturally embedded traditions like fireworks with climate policy goals. The debate remains emotional – and politically sensitive.
Climate Protection and Green Space Planning
Another important project is the renovation of Bochum City Park, which will be implemented in three construction phases until 2026. Investments totaling 13.4 million euros will be used for playgrounds, water features, paths, rose gardens, and new green areas. 75 new trees, shrubs, and perennials will enhance the park.
At the same time, the Old Pond is being renovated: dredging, new fountain installation, and fish relocation are planned. The measure is part of a broader plan for ecological renaturation and biodiversity promotion.
Outlook: The Future of Environmental Policy in Bochum
Bochum is on an exciting path: the city is implementing small but effective climate protection measures that are integrated into everyday life. At the same time, it remains under criticism with its tree care strategy and the debate on fireworks. The future will show whether the city is able to combine its climate protection goals with social and political acceptance.
A central challenge remains transparency and participation in decisions that affect the environment and the climatic living environment. Only through a dialogue with citizens and clear communication can Bochum design a climate and environmental policy that is both sustainable and democratic.
