Economic Development in Aachen: Initiatives and Perspectives in January 2026
In January 2026, the city of Aachen is placing greater emphasis on innovation and structural transformation to ensure economic resilience and labor market attractiveness. Initiatives such as the Welcome Center KMU, the Auszubildendenwerk Aachen, and the Meisterstipendien program demonstrate a clear commitment to strengthening the business location in a sustainable manner.
Economic Impulses in Aachen – Initiatives in January 2026
Economic development in Aachen in recent years has been shaped by structural changes, digitalization, and climate protection. In January 2026, the city and its partners are implementing targeted measures to secure jobs, attract skilled professionals, and make the business location more attractive. A particular focus is on the international recruitment of skilled workers, vocational training, and climate-friendly industrial zones.
International Skilled Workers: The Welcome Center KMU
A central element of Aachen's economic development is the Welcome Center KMU – Rheinisches Revier (WCR). This project, funded with a total of 3.25 million euros by the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Labour, Health, and Social Affairs (MAGS NRW), supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the recruitment and integration of international skilled workers.
With partners such as the Aachen Chamber of Crafts, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for the Middle Rhine Region, and the Local Integration Center of the Aachen Metropolitan Region, the WCR offers a wide range of services: from labor law advice and language training to assistance with finding housing. The goal is to position the Rhine Region as an attractive place to work and live, and to relieve SMEs through bundled measures.
The first funding phase runs until June 30, 2026, indicating that the project will be particularly active in the coming months. At the same time, the city of Aachen is responsible for its own share of the costs, underscoring the importance of a sustainable, partnership-based approach.
Climate-Neutral Future: Eilendorf-South as a Model Project
Another central issue is the climate-neutral transformation of the Eilendorf-South industrial area. In cooperation with the Aachen Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Regionetz GmbH, and STAWAG Energie GmbH, the city of Aachen is developing energy concepts that are both economically and environmentally viable.
FEV energy + resources GmbH has been commissioned to conduct a site and potential analysis. The goal is to develop scenarios for a climate-neutral energy supply, including photovoltaics, heat pumps, geothermal use, and shared energy models. The results will be integrated into the municipal heat planning and climate protection strategy and are intended to serve as a model for other industrial areas.
A "Digital Twin" of the area will be created to simulate energy consumption and supply scenarios. Companies will be actively involved, emphasizing a participatory approach. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2025, meaning it could already yield initial findings by January 2026.
Vocational Training as the Key to the Future: The Auszubildendenwerk Aachen
The shortage of skilled workers remains a central problem in Aachen as well. To address this, the city is planning to establish the Auszubildendenwerk Aachen. With a budget of 30,000 euros for concept development, the initiative is being implemented in three development stages, with stages 2 and 3 allocating significantly higher funds.
Funding will come from municipal funds and contributions from companies. The city administration recommends an initial funding of 50,000 euros for 2026 and 25,000 euros for 2027. Qualitative interviews with key training companies such as regio iT, Sparkasse Aachen, and Lindt & Sprüngli show that there is broad interest in the initiative. The Auszubildendenwerk is intended not only to create training positions but also to improve the quality of vocational training and to involve companies more closely in training policy.
Master Scholarships: A Long-Term Investment Approach
Another component to strengthen the economy is the scholarship program for master craftsmen and women. Role models include the scholarship programs of the districts of Düren and Euskirchen. The Aachen Metropolitan Region plans to award five scholarships of 5,000 euros annually, with the city of Aachen providing a maximum funding volume of 25,000 euros per year. The funding period is a maximum of three years.
The program is designed as a long-term investment in Aachen's economic future. However, it remains to be seen how legal and tax-related issues will be resolved. The city of Aachen will participate in the development of the concept and will implement the project from 2026 onwards. By focusing on master craftsmen and women as central actors in crafts and trade, Aachen is pursuing long-term stabilization of its economic structure.
Outlook: Growth Through Innovation and Cooperation
The initiatives in Aachen show that the city is deliberately focusing on innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. With the Welcome Center KMU, the Auszubildendenwerk, and master scholarships, the business location is not only being strengthened for current requirements but also prepared for future challenges. In particular, model projects such as Eilendorf-South demonstrate how economic development and climate protection can go hand in hand.
In the coming months, the first results will become visible, and it will be interesting to observe how these measures affect the labor market, the economic structure, and the quality of life in Aachen.
