E-Mobility and Wind Energy: Aachen's Climate Protection Strategy in April 2026

In April 2026, Aachen is setting new standards in the areas of climate protection and energy supply. The city is expanding its charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and accelerating the development of wind energy. We analyze the background, political decisions, and the impacts on climate, economy, and daily life in the region.

Climate Protection in Aachen: E-Mobility and Wind Energy in Focus

In April 2026, the city of Aachen made significant decisions in the areas of energy and climate protection. The development of the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and the expansion of wind energy are the central topics. These measures are part of the comprehensive climate protection concept AACHEN*2030, which aims for climate neutrality by 2030. The political and administrative steps show how Aachen is taking action at the local level to achieve national and international climate goals.

E-Mobility: Expansion of Charging Infrastructure

The SPD faction in the district council of Kornelimünster/Walheim submitted a motion to further improve the charging infrastructure. The goal is to provide between 2,200 and 2,400 publicly accessible charging points in Aachen by 2030. As part of the funding project ALigN, charging stations have already been renovated in Korneliusstraße and Pascalstraße.

Currently, a comprehensive concept for the district of Kornelimünster/Walheim is being developed for the period up to 2030. The assessment of potential locations for new charging stations is a central issue. For example, the parking lot at the Büchel-Haus is being examined to determine whether it can be integrated into the concept. Planning is also underway at the Gert-Engels-Platz and in the Korneliusmarkt area. Coordination with private operators who submit special usage requests is essential for the rapid expansion.

Wind Energy: Progress in the Land Use Plan

The expansion of wind energy is another focus area that became especially evident in April 2026. Amendment No. 2 of the land use plan AACHEN*2030 – Wind Energy Areas – was approved. The goal is to achieve climate neutrality by 2030 through the controlled expansion of wind energy. In the Integrated Climate Protection Concept (IKSK), wind energy is described as an indispensable component.

In April, a new decision was made to establish the plan, accompanied by public participation and online publication. The district councils of Aachen-Richterich and Aachen-Brand recommended the new establishment and public participation in accordance with the requirements of the Building Code (BauGB). The planning includes 12 areas designated as special zones with a purpose binding to wind energy.

These areas, covering a total of about 324.5 hectares, are planned as "rotor-outside-areas." On these sites, a facility potential of about 20 wind energy installations (WEA) can be realized. With a capacity of 4.5 MW per installation and a full load hour rate of 2,500, a total of 225 GWh of wind power per year could be generated – corresponding to around 22% of Aachen's total electricity demand in 2024. This would result in a reduction of nearly 100,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Climate Protection Goals and Environmental Compatibility

The measures for the use of wind energy have a positive relevance for climate protection, with the savings of over 770 tons of CO2 per year being assessed as "large." However, the relevance for climate change adaptation was evaluated as "not clearly defined." Environmental reports and expert assessments show that mitigation measures are considered in line with the BauGB to minimize negative effects on humans and nature.

The areas have been tested according to species protection, emission control, and infrastructure criteria and identified as balanced and legally sound in planning terms. Nevertheless, there was criticism – particularly regarding the precautionary distances of 400 meters to the WEA. During the public participation process, 172 statements from citizens and 37 from authorities were submitted, leading to adjustments to the areas.

Outlook: Climate Neutrality by 2030 – Challenges and Opportunities

Aachen is on the right path to achieving its climate goals. The expansion strategies for e-mobility and wind energy are crucial components on the way to climate neutrality. The cooperation with private actors, the integration into the public space, and the involvement of the population are just as important as the technical and legal framework conditions.

Future challenges will include further increasing public acceptance of wind energy and designing the charging infrastructure so that it is accessible and user-friendly for all users. At the same time, the expansion of renewable energy also offers opportunities – for example, for the local economy, the creation of jobs, and the strengthening of regional energy independence.
