Aachen April 2026: Mobility, Climate, and Housing in Focus

In April 2026, Aachen made important decisions regarding mobility projects, climate protection measures, and future urban development. Here is the monthly review.

From Park+Train to an Accessible City Map: Aachen in April 2026

What was important this month

  • New mobility options: "Park+Train" and "5 for 5 P+R" aim to reduce parking pressure and environmental stress.
  • Wind energy for climate neutrality 2030: 12 new wind energy areas contribute to CO2 reduction.
  • Accessible city map: Brand receives a new barrier-free city map.
  • Maintenance of wildflower meadows: Lower maintenance costs and long-term environmental benefits.
  • Aachen WM Special 2026: Opening program for the Equestrian World Championships with culture, food, and live music.

Mobility: Traffic experiments and new P+R offers

In April, Aachen focused more on sustainable mobility solutions. The traffic experiment in the Brühlstraße, operating under the name "Schulstraße," will be implemented soon—once the 2026 budget has legal force. With a total cost of 19,100 euros, the focus here is on visibility and safety.

In addition, two new P+R offers were launched: "Park+Train" for 19.50 euros and "5 for 5 P+R" for 5 euros. The goal is to reduce parking pressure in the city center and at the same time promote the use of public transport.

Not to be forgotten: The organic market is being moved from the Münsterplatz to the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz. The electricity connection for this measure is estimated at a minimum of 80,000 euros.

Housing and Urban Development: Wind Energy and an Accessible City Map

Aachen is looking confidently to the future. With the zoning plan 999S (Altstadtquartier Büchel Süd), a new district with housing, commercial space, and green areas is being developed. The planning is part of the long-term vision "AACHEN*2030."

In addition, 12 areas (324.5 hectares) have been designated as wind energy areas to accelerate the expansion of renewable energies. The reduction of the original 19 areas to 12 shows how precisely urban planning is coordinated in Aachen.

Another milestone is the creation of the accessible city map for Aachen-Brand. This is being developed on behalf of Department 56 and is a step towards greater inclusion and accessibility.

Climate: Wind Energy and Wildflower Meadows

In April, Aachen also used innovation in climate policy. With approximately 20 wind turbines that can produce up to 225 GWh/year, the new wind farms help meet Aachen's electricity demand and reduce CO2 emissions by 100,000 tons per year.

In addition, the preservation of wildflower meadows within the framework of the FLIP project is now guaranteed in the long term. The maintenance costs of 0.36 euros per square meter and year are significantly lower than those for lawn areas (0.90 euros/m²/year), which is also financially sensible.

The demographic concept was adopted, and the "Senior Support Plan" is now being implemented. In addition, the draft for climate neutrality 2030 will be presented on June 24, 2026.

Culture: Aachen WM Special 2026

The Equestrian World Championships 2026 are drawing closer, and Aachen is preparing with an extensive supporting program. Under the motto "Aachen WM Special 2026," there will be live music, a food market, a giant Ferris wheel, and a cultural program. The main stage will be on the market square, and the WM meeting point will be in the Katschhof.

The organization is in the hands of MAC e.V., supported by several city authorities. The event is also an opportunity to present Aachen as an international sports and cultural metropolis.

Overview: Urban Development in Motion

April 2026 was characterized by a clear direction: sustainability, inclusion, and innovation. Whether in the areas of mobility, climate protection, or housing—Aachen shows how a modern city can be designed for the future.

It will be interesting to see how the projects develop in the coming months and what impact they will have on the lives of the people of Aachen.

Conclusion and Outlook

April 2026 was a month in which Aachen made decisions that will strengthen the city for the future. From mobility projects to wind energy and cultural highlights—the city is moving towards a sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant metropolis.

In May, the focus will mainly be on the implementation of the adopted projects and the preparation for the Equestrian World Championships. In addition, the presentation of the climate neutrality concept will be another key focus.
