Education Policy in Salzhausen: Progress in After-School Care
In February 2026, significant developments in education and public facilities were at the center of attention in Salzhausen. The School Committee of the Samtgemeinde met and reported on the current status of after-school care at primary schools as well as renovation plans for the school in Garstedt.
Education Policy in Salzhausen: Progress in After-School Care
In February 2026, the Samtgemeinde Salzhausen made significant strides in education policy. The School Committee convened on February 12 and comprehensively discussed the status of after-school care at primary schools as well as the planning of necessary renovation measures at the primary school in Garstedt. These topics reflect the Samtgemeinde's forward-thinking approach to bringing educational institutions to a high functional and pedagogical level.
The After-Hours Regulation and Care Strategy
The Samtgemeinde Salzhausen is responding to the after-hours regulation, which came into effect on January 1, 2026. This regulation establishes a framework for the development of full-day schools. However, Salzhausen has deliberately chosen not to pursue the full-day school model, but rather opted for care that extends into the regular school day. This form of care has proven successful in recent years: Registration numbers for the 2026/2027 school year remain stable, and all care needs can be met. Parents are clearly providing positive feedback, confirming the quality and organization of the care.
The current structure allows for flexible addressing of care needs without overburdening school facilities. Moreover, planning already looks ahead to the future: It is proposed to include a cafeteria in future renovation plans, as this will gain in importance in the coming years.
Renovation Needs at Garstedt Primary School
Another central topic of the meeting was the renovation needs at Garstedt Primary School. The building urgently requires energy-efficient renovations, including the replacement of the heating system and the exchange of supply lines. The administration presented cost estimates for renovation, partial new construction, or complete new construction. Sustainability was also considered: A heat pump is part of the planning, while a photovoltaic system, although not included in the cost estimates, is not considered a financial obstacle by committee members.
Some committee members suggested considering a partial new construction, for example, preserving an administrative wing with an auditorium. In addition, it is proposed to develop a pedagogical concept for a possible reconstruction or new construction phase already now, in order to save time in the preliminary planning phase. These proposals show that the Samtgemeinde Salzhausen is thinking long-term and views educational institutions as central places for social and pedagogical development.
Youth Participation and Political Education
The meeting of the School Committee also provided an outlook on other initiatives that the Samtgemeinde Salzhausen is advancing in the areas of political education and youth participation. It was reported that the new youth parliament was established on January 29. This body provides youth with a platform to engage in political topics and shape decision-making processes.
In addition, the event "Experiencing Democracy" will take place at the House of the Future on February 18. The aim is to inspire and inform citizens about political engagement. These activities show that Salzhausen not only focuses on infrastructure, but also on social and democratic education.
Outlook: Education as a Central Building Block for the Future
The decisions and plans discussed in February 2026 underscore that education is considered a central building block for the future in Salzhausen. The Samtgemeinde is investing in modern, sustainable, and future-oriented educational institutions, promoting after-school child care, and at the same time creating spaces for political education and youth participation.
Although the concrete renovation and new construction plans are still under discussion, a clear effort is evident to ensure and improve educational institutions in the long term. The current care situation is stable, and parental satisfaction confirms the right course. In the coming months, it will be interesting to observe how the plans for Garstedt School become more concrete and whether new concepts such as cluster classes or a new pedagogical model enter the discussion.
