Education Policy in Salzgitter: Renaming, Safety, and Investments in March 2026
In March 2026, numerous decisions and debates on education and public institutions were at the center of attention in Salzgitter. From addressing safety concerns to renovating school buildings, the Education and Culture Committee set key priorities.
Education Policy in Salzgitter: Renaming, Safety, and Investments
Education policy in Salzgitter is evolving on multiple fronts in March 2026: In addition to naming and renaming of schools, issues of safety, investments in educational infrastructure, and the Education and Participation Package are in focus. The Education and Culture Committee met on March 5, 2026, and laid the groundwork for future-oriented decisions.
Renaming of Wiesenstraße Primary School
The primary school Altstadtschule at the Wiesenstraße location will be renamed to "Grundschule Am Salze" starting August 1, 2026. This decision followed a unanimous resolution by the school board and an internal naming process involving students, teachers, and parents. The new name not only emphasizes the historical significance of salt for the city but also marks a joint new beginning after the organizational merger with the primary school at Wiesenstraße.
The school will also move to a new building in May 2026. The naming follows § 107 of the Lower Saxony School Act and is part of a process aimed at strengthening the school's identity and future. In addition to the new name, the school retains its official designation.
School Safety: Response to School Shooting Alarms
Another focus of the committee meeting was school safety in Salzgitter. In light of several school shooting alarms in the region, measures to improve protection were central to the discussion. The council decided to include child and youth violence in the security concept "Salzgitter – safe and clean 2.0." Additionally, starting in 2026, an annual report on the safety of children and youth will be compiled, including police interventions in the school environment and violent crimes at schools.
The AfD council faction emphasized that binding protective measures at schools are essential. Parents, teachers, and students are calling for clearly structured concepts, better communication channels, and the integration of the municipal security service into school policies. In addition, the installation of emergency alarm systems at schools is being examined, as well as the strengthening of access controls.
Investments in Educational Infrastructure: The Startchancen Program
The city of Salzgitter is continuing to invest heavily in its educational institutions. Within the Startchancen Program 2024–2034, a total of 22 million euros will be invested in 16 Salzgitter schools by 2031. Particularly noteworthy is the funding for renovation work on outdoor facilities, with a maximum of 1.5 million euros per school. For example, the Klunkau Secondary School will receive approximately 500,000 euros for renovation work.
In addition, construction projects and investments in equipment are planned to meet the requirements of modern learning spaces. The administration emphasized that funding is secured and renovation work has already begun this year. Annual funding of 10,000 euros is planned for playground equipment on schoolyards to meet the educational and sports needs of students.
Future of Hallendorf Primary School and the Education and Participation Package
Another topic discussed was the future of Hallendorf Primary School. Due to pollutants in the indoor air, the school has been closed, and parents and teachers are demanding clear information and perspectives. The AfD council faction submitted specific inquiries regarding the resumption of lessons, alternative locations, and the construction of a container school. The administration has not yet provided binding information, which has caused unrest in the public.
Additionally, the Education and Participation Package was in focus. The council faction Die Linke asked for the number of eligible individuals who used benefits from the package in 2025. This package supports, for example, school trips, class excursions, lunch provision, and educational support. The transparency regarding the use and distribution of these benefits is the subject of current discussions.
Outlook: Education and Culture as Central Municipal Policy
The decisions of March 2026 show that education and culture in Salzgitter are not treated as isolated topics but are closely linked to safety, infrastructure, and social engagement. The renaming of the primary school, the security measures at schools, and the investments in modern learning spaces highlight the city's forward-looking approach.
Although challenges such as the closure of Hallendorf Primary School or the implementation of the Education and Participation Package have not yet been fully resolved, Salzgitter demonstrates through these measures that education policy is a central building block for a vibrant, safe, and livable city.
