Climate Protection and Environment in Langenhagen – March 2026
In March 2026, the city of Langenhagen focused on precise planning and investments in the areas of climate and environment. The emphasis was on winter service organization, climate adaptation measures such as stormwater retention basins, and the reduction of environmental burdens. This blog analyzes the key decisions and their impacts.
Climate Protection and Environment in Langenhagen – March 2026
The city of Langenhagen has been implementing a comprehensive climate policy for several years, covering both short-term crisis management and long-term climate adaptation. In March 2026, particular attention was given to the 2026 winter service and the completion of stormwater retention basins. These measures are not only crucial for the safety of the population during the cold season, but also contribute to the reduction of environmental burdens and adaptation to climate change.
Winter Service 2026: Organization and Environmental Impact
The 2026 winter service was meticulously planned in its organization. The city deployed a total of 5 large vehicles, 4 narrow-gauge vehicles, and 5 trucks for the hand crews. Personnel included 10 employees with BCE driver’s licenses, 8 for narrow-gauge vehicles, and 30 for key junctions and public buildings. The on-call readiness was closely coordinated to ensure a response to unexpected weather events.
A central focus was on the use of de-icing materials. On average, 500 tons of salt, 200 tons of sand, and 90,000 liters of brine (NaCl) were used. The area-specific salt application rate was 5–20 g/m² of wet salt FS 30. Each de-icing cycle required between 12 and 25 tons of salt. These figures show that salt consumption was carefully managed to minimize environmental impact.
Climate Adaptation: Stormwater Retention Basins Leibnizstraße and Weidenbruch
In March 2026, two important climate adaptation measures were completed: the stormwater retention basin (RRB) Leibnizstraße and the RRB Weidenbruch in Godshorn. The RRB Leibnizstraße was completed on 20.02.2026 and accepted on 17.02.2026. It was deliberately constructed without fencing, as the slopes were designed with a flat gradient of 1:2. This allows people and animals to safely exit the basin in the event of a flood.
The RRB Weidenbruch had already been completed and accepted in November 2025. Both basins contribute to the mitigation of heavy rainfall effects and are key components of climate adaptation in Langenhagen. They improve water management, reduce flood risks, and help protect public infrastructure.
Winter Service Fees and Transparency
The winter service fees for 2026 were also addressed. The fee for winter service class A (snow removal and de-icing) was 0.013 €/m² annually, and for winter service class B (snow removal only) 0.004 €/m². The fee structure is transparent and reflects the costs of the respective services. At the same time, it enables a financially viable implementation of the winter service, which is essential for the safety and mobility of citizens.
Outlook: What does climate protection in Langenhagen look like going forward?
The measures taken in March 2026 show that Langenhagen is actively committed to climate protection and adaptation. Investments in stormwater retention basins and the optimization of winter services are examples of how climate-related challenges can be structurally addressed. In the coming months, it will be important to evaluate the experiences from the 2026 winter service and possibly make improvements in salt management and staff planning. It is also important to inform citizens about progress in climate adaptation and actively involve them in the process.
