Monthly Review of Oldenburg District – April 2026
In April 2026, the Oldenburg District intensified its efforts in education, integration, and sustainability. Summer language camps, pilot projects for asylum seekers, and support for German language courses are central topics that directly impact the daily lives of residents.
Education, Integration, and Sustainability in Focus
What was important this month:
- Funding of two summer language camps in Ganderkesee and Hude with 6,000 euros each
- Launch of the pilot project "Work Opportunities for Asylum Seekers" in cooperation with Großenkneten and Wildeshausen
- Support for German language learning opportunities for newcomers provided by the district administration
- SPD calls for improved access to integration courses
- Successful implementation of summer and autumn camps in 2025 with 63 participating children
Summer Language Camps: Funding and Success
The Oldenburg District once again supported summer language camps. This year, the municipalities of Ganderkesee and Hude each received 6,000 euros, provided the municipalities also contribute matching amounts. The total funding thus amounts to 12,000 euros. Of this, 7,500 euros is allocated to personnel, 1,000 euros to bus costs, 3,000 euros to catering, and 500 euros to materials.
The 2025 camps were already very successful: A summer camp took place in Ganderkesee from August 4 to 9, and an autumn camp in Hude from October 20 to 25. In total, 63 children participated, supported by both volunteers and professional staff. This experience strengthens confidence in the model and motivates further expansion in the coming years.
Integration: Pilot Project and Language Learning Support
Another important project is the pilot project "Work Opportunities for Asylum Seekers (AGH)," which started on November 1, 2025, in cooperation with the pilot municipalities of Großenkneten and Wildeshausen. The project is accompanied by the Integration Office, and the introduction of the payment card for asylum seekers has been implemented across the entire district.
In addition, the SPD district council faction advocated for the removal of access restrictions to integration courses under § 44 (4) AufenthG. The district will support adult education providers in making German language courses for newcomers more accessible. To this end, a meeting with the adult education centers and the Rural Adult Education (Ländliche Erwachsenenbildung) was organized on March 3, 2026, to discuss support strategies.
Communication and Transparency in the District Council
The public meeting on April 14, 2026, proceeded in an orderly manner. The proper invitation, the legal capacity to make decisions, and the agenda were confirmed. In addition, the minutes of the meeting from November 11, 2025, were approved.
Another proposal by the SPD district council faction (BV-25/2026) for the funding of the 2026 summer language camps was discussed in the Integration and Equality Committee. The documents IV-33/2026, IV-34/2026, and BV-25/2026, as well as the file numbers 91 10 30, played a central role in this process.
Integration and Education as Central Topics
The decisions made in April show that integration and education are being advanced on a broad front in the Oldenburg District. On the one hand, structural barriers such as restrictions on integration courses are being addressed; on the other hand, concrete measures such as summer language camps and work opportunities for asylum seekers are being implemented. These projects not only contribute to social inclusion but also strengthen the local community and promote intercultural encounters.
Conclusion and Outlook
April 2026 was marked by concrete steps toward a more integrated and education-focused society. The cooperation between the district, municipalities, and civil society organizations is crucial. In the coming months, it will be important to evaluate the results of the pilot projects and to establish long-term structures for German language learning and employment opportunities. In addition, the planned summer language camps in 2026 will be another milestone, offering children and young people in the district a meaningful and educational leisure framework.
