Göttingen: The Ten-Year Renovation of the German Theatre and Its Impact on Urban Development
In Göttingen, one of the largest municipal construction projects in decades is beginning: the comprehensive renovation of the German Theatre. With a volume of 168 million euros and a duration of up to ten years, the city has set a milestone in cultural and urban development. This blog post analyzes the background, planning steps, and long-term effects of the project.
The Renovation of Göttingen's German Theatre: A Ten-Year Challenge
Göttingen's German Theatre, a cultural venue with a history of over 100 years, is facing a fundamental renovation. In the past weeks, the city of Göttingen has decided to implement the renovation in three phases over a period of up to ten years. With a total volume of 168 million euros, of which 25.567 million euros are allocated for the first phase, the project is not only financially significant, but also of great urban and cultural importance.
Renovation Phase 1: The Starting Signal
The first renovation phase includes technical infrastructure, securing the building's exterior, the basic renovation of stage technology, and the planning of the new stage hall. Additionally, the renovation of the GVZ halls will begin, in order to relocate the workshops there. This phase will cost approximately 25.567 million euros, of which 9 million euros have already been accounted for in the city of Göttingen's budget.
The project's financing is closely linked to the phased implementation. This allows for better liquidity and increases the chances of applying for grant money. Moreover, reserves of 20% for unforeseen costs (e.g., heritage protection) and 3% per year for price increases until 2030 have been planned.
The New Stage Hall: A Focus of the Renovation
A central part of the renovation plan is the construction of a new stage hall at Theaterplatz 11. This will be built on the site of the current workshop building and will serve as a future rehearsal and stage area. The stage hall will not be directly connected to the existing building, but will be constructed as a separate facility. It will include office space, rooms for theatre education, and a rehearsal stage.
The interim use during the renovation phase is a crucial advantage of the project. In this way, the stage hall can already be used during the renovation of the existing building, without the need for an additional interim structure. This saves costs and enables the continuous use of the theatre's offerings.
Urban and Cultural Impacts
The renovation of the German Theatre is not only a project for preserving cultural infrastructure, but also an urban signal. The new construction of the stage hall and the renovation of the existing building show how Göttingen intends to deal with historical structures and modern requirements.
Additionally, the route planning within the theatre complex will be optimized, which will not only ease the work of theatre employees, but also improve logistics. The relocation of the workshops to the GVZ halls reduces interventions in the historical building and creates new synergies.
Forward-Looking: What Comes After 2035?
The renovation of the German Theatre is a project that will shape the next ten years. With completion in 2035, Göttingen will have a modern, climate-friendly theatre complex that can serve as a model both culturally and in terms of urban development. The current planning takes into account not only architectural aspects, but also the long-term effects on the city structure, jobs, and Göttingen's cultural identity.
The city of Göttingen has decided with this project for a sustainable, urban and culturally coherent development. The first renovation phase marks the beginning of a new era for the German Theatre and thus for the entire city.
