Emden in Focus – What Happened in February 2026

In February 2026, Emden was marked by planning, safety, and cultural diversity. Here is the monthly review.

Emden remains in motion

What was important this month

  • Building plan C 17 "Neutorstraße" was unanimously approved.
  • New housing plans in the "St. Walburga" area, including a multi-generational housing complex.
  • Climate protection measures with KfW funding of over 900,000 €.
  • Youth support planning advanced – including inclusive grammar schools and prevention of drug use.
  • Fireworks ban at the Neuen Markt is in planning – the inner-city safety partnership is involved.
  • Cultural highlights such as the Brick Expressionism exhibition and the new season at the Festspielhaus.

Housing and Urban Development: New Plans and Goodbyes

The building plan C 17 "Neutorstraße" is now in Stage III and was unanimously approved. The consideration of 24 comments shows that the city of Emden pays close attention to the needs of its citizens. In the St. Walburga area, a multi-generational housing complex with 16 residential units and four barrier-free row houses is planned.

At the same time, the building plan D 140 "Uphusen housing site" was canceled. Due to poor building conditions, realization was not possible. The city has now provided compensatory sites in Twixlum and Larrelt to ensure continued housing promotion.

These plans are part of the comprehensive urban development strategy, which aims to keep Emden livable and attractive in the future. In the future, citizens will be able to stay informed about the publication of planning drafts and have an influence – a central element of citizen participation.

Safety and Order: A Ban in the City Center?

In February, a proposal for the creation of a general administrative order according to § 18 of the Fireworks Ban Ordinance was discussed. The city plans to issue a spatial fireworks ban for the Neuen Markt. In particular, the inner-city safety partnership, including representatives from the restaurant industry, will be involved in the decision-making process.

This measure is not only a step toward urban safety, but also a response to incidents on New Year's Eve. The committee for public safety, order, and citizen services unanimously acknowledged the topic – a signal that Emden also pays attention to safety in sensitive areas like the city center.

Culture and Memory: Emden as a Cultural Hub

In February, the special exhibition "ZICKZACK – Emder Backsteinexpressionismus vor 100 Jahren" was announced. It will be on display at the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum Emden from 09.05.2026 to 01.04.2027. The exhibition focuses on the artistic and societal upheavals of the Weimar Republic – an exciting project for everyone interested in history, architecture, and cultural development.

Additionally, the new season 2026/2027 at the Festspielhaus am Wall was presented. It contributes to the top goal of quality of life for families and dynamic development as a leisure city. Emden remains ahead culturally – and with a clear strategic orientation.

Final Verdict with a Look Ahead

February 2026 was a month in which Emden remained active on various levels. From new housing planning through safety measures to cultural projects – the city is looking forward and setting impulses that increase the quality of life for its citizens. In March, further decisions will follow, especially in the Administrative Committee and the Council, where central topics such as the financing of the city center renovation and the long-term use of the city archive will be on the agenda.

Stay tuned – Emden is continuing to develop, and the city as a place for its citizens is becoming stronger.
