Wiesbaden April 2026: Mobility in Focus – Cycling, Safety and Infrastructure
In April 2026, the city of Wiesbaden will focus on sustainable and safe mobility with a range of decisions and initiatives. Particular emphasis is placed on investments in cycle superhighways, improvements in the cycling infrastructure, and measures for noise reduction and traffic safety.
Mobility in Wiesbaden: April 2026 in Focus
April 2026 marks a decisive step in the mobility policy of Wiesbaden, the state capital of Hesse. Against the backdrop of increasing demand for sustainable transport and the need to improve traffic safety, the city has decided on a range of measures that prioritize cycling, public space, and infrastructure.
Wiesbaden-Mainz Cycle Superhighway: Start of Implementation
One of the largest investments of the month is the first construction phase of the Wiesbaden-Mainz Cycle Superhighway (RSW), stretching from Klingholzstraße to Theodor-Heuss-Ring. With a budget of 900,000 euros, the project is registered in the 2026–2028 budget. The section is eligible for funding and will be financed 70% by the State of Hesse.
The Magistrate is tasked with preparing land acquisition for future sections, with implementation contingent on land availability and funding. This decision underlines Wiesbaden's long-term vision of creating a modern cycling infrastructure with effects beyond the city limits.
Cycling Safety: Measures Along Theodor-Heuss-Ring
Another focus was on increasing traffic safety for cyclists along Theodor-Heuss-Ring. With an investment of 192,000 euros, a new division of the road space is decided in order to improve safety for cyclists. In addition, the Greens' proposal to secure the cycle path with delineators up to Breitenbachstraße is unanimously accepted.
These measures are part of the long-term strategy to make cycling in Wiesbaden more attractive and safer – not least to reduce the share of motorized individual transport (MIV).
Infrastructure Improvements in Rheinstraße
In Rheinstraße between Friedrich-Ebert-Allee and Frankfurter Straße, a comprehensive resurfacing of the road surface is planned for 2026, combined with the construction of a safe crossing of Mainzer Straße. The area is currently strongly dominated by MIV, which is why closing the gap in the cycle route from Rheinstraße to City East is considered urgently necessary.
The measure underlines the need to strengthen cycling in existing traffic axes while simultaneously redesigning public space.
Further Measures for Traffic Safety
In addition to investments in cycling infrastructure, other safety measures were also decided. In Hagenstraße, the connection to Angelika-Thiels-Straße will be funded with 490,000 euros. Furthermore, it will be examined whether a "residents only" sign can be installed and whether a cycle path can be realized as part of the construction work.
In Moltkering-Straße, a protection by delineators is decided to prevent motor vehicles from using the cycle lane. Likewise, a bicycle turn at the corner of New-York-Straße is unanimously accepted.
Noise Reduction and Parking Optimization
Guntherstraße was the subject of a CDU proposal to restrict parking to one side of the road to ensure passage for emergency vehicles. However, the proposal was withdrawn, highlighting the complexity of parking planning in narrow streets.
In Weidenbornstraße, a speed measuring device is proposed to reduce noise pollution from cars. In addition, the green pruning at the exit of the HIT supermarket in Hasengartenstraße is to be improved to optimize visibility.
Outlook: Mobility in Transition
April 2026 shows that Wiesbaden is taking a clear course towards sustainable mobility. The measures decided are not only technically ambitious but also widely supported politically. The cooperation between the local committees, the Magistrate and the parties is a decisive factor for success.
In the future, it will be important to advance the implementation of the projects, secure funding and actively involve citizens in the process. Events such as the public meeting of the local committee on April 29, 2026, offer valuable opportunities for discussion and transparency.
