April 2026 – Gießen looks back on a constitutive period
In April 2026, Gießen established new political structures following the local elections through numerous constitutive meetings. From the town hall to the local advisory councils – here is the monthly review.
New Setup and New Beginnings
What was important this month
- New elections in the town hall and local advisory councils: Following the local elections in March 2026, numerous constitutive meetings took place in April to elect new leaders.
- Confirmation of the election: 15 March 2026 is declared valid.
- New leadership in the municipal council: A new council chairman was elected, and the rules of procedure were confirmed.
- Committees for election preparations formed: The Election Committee and the Committee for Document Access were established to prepare for the next steps.
- Unanimous elections in Lützellinden: The local advisory council in Lützellinden unanimously elected new leaders.
Town Hall: The municipal council reconstituted
On 30 April 2026, the first constitutive meeting of the municipal council took place. Mayor Frank-Tilo Becher opened the session and led the elections for the central roles within the municipal council. A new council chairman was elected, who will take over the leadership in the future.
In addition, the rules of procedure from the previous electoral period were confirmed, ensuring continuity. Two important committees were also formed: the Election Committee for the Magistrate Election and the Committee for Document Access, which was established at the request of a quarter of the council members or a political group.
Another key focus was the election of representatives from the city of Gießen to the association meeting of ekom21 – KGRZ Hessen. The local elections held on 15 March 2026 were officially confirmed, marking the final approval of the entire process.
Local Advisory Councils: New structures in the districts
In April, several local advisory councils convened for constitutive meetings to fill their new roles. In Rödgen, a new local council chairman was elected, while in Wieseck, Kleinlinden, and Lützellinden, local council chairmen, deputy chairmen, and secretaries were elected. In Lützellinden, these elections were unanimous, indicating a high level of unity within the new local advisory council structure.
Special attention was also given to the appointment of the local court. In Wieseck and Kleinlinden, discussions took place regarding the extension of Elmar Knappik’s term of office. According to the provisions of the Local Court Act (OGG) and the Hessian Municipal Code (HGO), the term of office may be limited to five years if the nominee has reached the age of 65. This topic will continue to be discussed in the coming weeks, as new proposals for the district court of Gießen must be submitted by 14 June 2026.
Civic Participation and Transparency
Another important topic was civic participation. In several local advisory council and municipal council meetings, open question sessions were introduced, allowing residents to directly present their concerns. This form of transparency is new and is seen as a positive step for communication between politics and the population.
In addition, all meeting documents, such as resolutions and agendas, were made publicly accessible. For example, in Lützellinden, the resolution texts were published as PDF files on 4 May 2026, improving the traceability of the decision-making process.
Overview: Establishment of new structures
April 2026 was marked in Gießen by the establishment of new political structures following the local elections. The municipal council has reconstituted itself, the local advisory councils have elected their new leaders, and important preparations for the Magistrate Election have been made. At the same time, the city addressed the appointment of the local court and strengthened civic participation through open question sessions and transparency.
Outlook: Preparation for the Magistrate Election
In the coming weeks, preparations for the election of full-time Magistrate members will be intensified. The Election Committee, already formed in April, will play a central role. Further discussions regarding the appointment of the local court are also expected, particularly in Wieseck and Kleinlinden. The city of Gießen will continue to focus on transparency and civic participation – not least to strengthen trust in the new structures.
