Coburg's Urban Development in April 2026: From Ventilation Systems to the Kaeser Charging Park

In April 2026, the city of Coburg set important milestones in urban development. In addition to the modernization of administrative buildings and the implementation of the cycling concept, the construction of the new Kaeser Charging Park was at the center of attention. An overview of the significant decisions and projects.

Urban Development in Motion: Coburg's April 2026

Coburg has established itself as a dynamic actor in urban development in recent years. In April 2026, several central projects were decided and implemented that will sustainably change the cityscape and infrastructure. In addition to smaller but important improvements in administration and cycling infrastructure, the "Kaeser Charging Park" project was the main focus.

Ventilation System in the Council Chamber: A Technical Decision with Historical Background

A rather inconspicuous but technically significant decision was the choice of the implementation variant for a new ventilation system in the council chamber E04 in the administrative buildings at Steingasse 18. Several options were presented, including "ceiling swirl diffusers," "source air outlets," and "long throw nozzles." However, these were evaluated as insufficient.

The "duct nozzles" variant was finally chosen as the most sensible solution. It was coordinated with the Lower Monument Protection Authority and the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation. Using model installations, it was examined which variant would functionally and aesthetically best fit the historic building. The decision was based on the need to modernize the ventilation technology without destroying the building's structural integrity.

Cycling and Traffic Calming: Relocating Heavy Traffic from Town Centers

Another focus was the implementation of the cycling concept, especially in the town center of Beiersdorf. Here, two-sided cycle protection lanes with a width of 1.25 meters each were marked. The goal is to secure cycling traffic while advancing traffic calming. In the areas of Beiersdorf and Neuses, structural measures were planned to divert heavy goods and private vehicle traffic from the town centers – away from narrow streets and towards the new State Road 2205.

The city deliberately placed emphasis on public participation: An online consultation in February 2026 enabled residents to express their opinions on the planned measures. In addition, the citizens' associations of Beiersdorf and Neuses were actively involved in the planning to ensure broad acceptance of the traffic calming measures.

The Kaeser Charging Park: A Milestone for Coburg's Infrastructure

The most important decision of the month, however, concerned the draft zoning plan No. 103 19 c 1/5 for the area east of Glender Straße. This plan lays the foundation for the construction of the "Kaeser Charging Park," a project that is intended to position Coburg as a modern infrastructure and industrial city.

As part of the project, a public charging park with up to 60 HPC charging points (300 kW) for passenger cars and 4 heavy goods vehicle fast-charging points will be created. The park will be built on a site of 1.5 hectares and will include service buildings with a showroom, seating areas, beverage and snack machines, and sanitary facilities. A bakery and a flexible exhibition area complete the offering.

In addition, Christenstraße will be redesigned into a "Kaeser Alley" with a wide cycle and pedestrian path parallel to the street. The street itself will be widened to 8.25 meters to meet the requirements of special vehicles. The planning also takes ecological aspects into account, such as green roofs, rainwater management, and the protection of habitats.

Sustainability and Transparency: Ecological and Social Aspects in Focus

The zoning plan was drawn up in a simplified procedure according to § 13 BauGB as the basic features of the planning were not affected. Nevertheless, extensive ecological and social aspects were considered. The city of Coburg has an integral urban climate concept (ISKK) and a concept for flood risk management, which have been incorporated into the planning.

Special attention was also paid to public participation. An open information event was initiated to ensure the acceptance of the project. In addition, compensation areas for the loss of the habitat CO-1227 were planned, including succession areas, wildflower meadows, and evaporation beds.

Outlook: Coburg as a Pioneer in Infrastructure Development

April 2026 was a month with clear urban development impulses in Coburg. Whether in the field of administration, cycling, or infrastructure – the city has shown that it is capable of planning and transparently implementing complex projects. The Kaeser Charging Park is not only a symbol of technological innovation, but also a sign of Coburg's ambitions as an attractive business location in the 21st century.
