Swimming Lessons in Degerloch: A Challenge for Health and Education
Due to the closure of the swimming pool at the Lothar-Christmann-Haus in 2025, the Degerloch District Advisory Board has submitted a proposal to make the teaching swimming pool of the Wilhelmsgymnasium accessible for children's and youth swimming lessons. The demand for swimming lessons is particularly high, yet the infrastructure is insufficient.
Swimming Lessons in Degerloch: Challenges and Solutions for 2026
Swimming lessons are an essential part of health education in schools – and in Stuttgart, especially in Degerloch, they present a challenge. With the closure of the swimming pool at the Lothar-Christmann-Haus at the end of 2025, a central piece of infrastructure was lost, which had been crucial for ensuring swimming lessons in the region. As a result, the Degerloch District Advisory Board had to respond and submit a proposal to find at least a temporary solution.
The Proposal: Use of the Teaching Swimming Pool at the Wilhelmsgymnasium
In January 2026, the Degerloch District Advisory Board intensely discussed the proposal to make the teaching swimming pool of the Wilhelmsgymnasium accessible for swimming lessons for children and youth. The goal is to close the gap created by the closure of the Lothar-Christmann-Haus. The proposal explicitly calls on the School Administration Office to allow commercial or association use of the teaching swimming pool to ensure swimming lessons continue to be offered in the region.
The discussion had already begun earlier, with a statement on the FDP faction's motion 10/2025, which also supported opening the teaching swimming pool to external providers. This shows that the issue is not only a priority within the District Advisory Board, but also on a political level.
Why is Swimming Lessons So Important?
The importance of swimming lessons goes far beyond physical activity. They are part of preventive health promotion and make a valuable contribution to increasing water safety among young people. In Degerloch, the demand is especially high – not least due to the after-effects of the Corona pandemic, which led to a decline in physical activity and the loss of structures.
At the same time, there are no replacement swimming pools in the surrounding area, which exacerbates the situation. Without a quick solution, a gap in the educational and health care of young people in the region threatens to emerge. The teaching swimming pool of the Wilhelmsgymnasium could serve as a first bridge – provided the city administration approves its use by external providers.
What Are the Next Steps?
The proposal by the Degerloch District Advisory Board is a first step in the right direction. However, the implementation depends on the approval of the School Administration Office. It is important that the use of the teaching swimming pool is not only planned in the short term, but also in the long term. At the same time, the city of Stuttgart should review its swimming pool strategy to better plan for future closures and ensure the demand for swimming lessons in the region is met in the long term.
Outlook: Swimming Lessons as a Societal Responsibility
Swimming lessons are more than just a sports subject – they are a societal responsibility. In a time when the health and mobility of young people are increasingly in focus, infrastructure must not fall behind. Stuttgart, and especially Degerloch, has seized the opportunity with the proposal to use the teaching swimming pool to continue ensuring swimming lessons for children and youth. How this opportunity is used now depends on the city administration.
