Mobility in Hohenwettersbach: Challenges and Opportunities in April 2026
In April 2026, several mobility-related decisions were in focus in Hohenwettersbach, a district of Karlsruhe, aiming at climate-friendly alternatives and better school connectivity. The local council discussed proposals for the expansion of car-sharing and bicycle rental stations as well as improvements to the school bus service.
Mobility Developments in Hohenwettersbach – A Focus in April
In April 2026, the local council of Hohenwettersbach initiated several measures to improve the mobility infrastructure, aimed at ecological sustainability as well as better accessibility. The proposals and discussions reflect the trend of reducing car traffic while strengthening public transport and climate-friendly means of transport.
Expansion of Carsharing Offers
The local council of Hohenwettersbach has applied to examine, in cooperation with stadtmobil Carsharing, the possibility of expanding the carsharing network in the region. Currently, two vehicles are available in Hohenwettersbach and one in Bergwald. The goal is to improve local mobility and at the same time reduce parking pressure in built-up areas.
The city of Karlsruhe has noted in its statement that stadtmobil is interested in establishing a further station in Hohenwettersbach. The evaluation of possible locations is already underway. However, the final implementation depends on financial viability and the conditions defined in the upcoming tender for the bicycle rental system (FVS) KVV.nextbike.
Future of the KVV.nextbike Bicycle Rental System
The FVS KVV.nextbike is an established part of the mobility offering in Hohenwettersbach. The current contract model is valid until the end of February 2027. During this time, no extensions or structural changes are planned. Only after the new tender, which is structured as a budget-based grant, is it conceivable to expand the system.
The city of Karlsruhe has clarified in its statement that an expansion could take place under the conditions of the new terms and with cost coverage by the city or the local administration. This could bring new bike stations to Hohenwettersbach in the future, provided demand and financial conditions allow it.
School Bus Transport: Between Necessity and Proportionality
Another focus of the local council was the improvement of school bus transport, especially for children attending the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Rüppurr. Hohenwettersbach does not have secondary schools, so the connection to schools outside the district is particularly important.
Currently, 46 students from Hohenwettersbach use the school bus to Rüppurr. According to the local council, the journey takes about 45–50 minutes, which is significantly longer than by car (about 15 minutes). For this reason, the SPD / Bürgerliste local council faction has submitted a motion for the establishment of a direct school bus to Rüppurr.
According to the statement, the VBK (Verkehrs-Betriebe Karlsruhe) cannot offer additional route services unless it receives a specific order. In addition, additional trips are only justified at a high level of occupancy. The city of Karlsruhe has therefore requested a closer examination of the occupancy rates and destinations of the existing school bus connections in order to make possible adjustments.
Outlook: Mobility as a Key Issue for Hohenwettersbach
The decisions and discussions in April 2026 show that mobility remains a central issue in Hohenwettersbach. The proposals for carsharing expansions and bicycle rental stations as well as the debate on school bus transport reflect the challenges that come with urban development.
The future will show whether and to what extent the proposed measures can be implemented. It is crucial that the interests of the residents of Hohenwettersbach are taken into account in the planning – both in terms of ecological sustainability and practical accessibility.
