Freiburg's Sports Policy in March 2026: Investments, Collaborations, and Future Plans
In March 2026, Freiburg's Sports Committee made several decisions aimed at securing the city's sports infrastructure and physical activity offerings for the future. From new sports fields to support programs and inclusive initiatives – here is an overview.
Freiburg's Sports Policy: Investments, Collaborations, and Future Plans
The city of Freiburg has long been a pioneer in promoting physical activity and sports development. In March 2026, the Sports Committee made numerous decisions that not only strengthen the current sports infrastructure but also set the course for the next ten to fifteen years. The topics range from the development of the South Sports Park to the support of sports clubs and inclusive physical activity offerings.
Development of the South Sports Park: A Future-Oriented Plan
The South Sports Park is a central project for sports development in Freiburg. The area between Haslach, St. Georgen, and Vauban will be further developed into a multifunctional sports and leisure facility in the coming years. The city had already passed a pre-emption ordinance in November 2024 to secure the land in the long term.
In March 2026, the progress of the development concept was the focus. The Freiburg planning office bhmp is working on a concept that will be completed by 2027. The plan includes not only sports fields but also club rooms and climbing facilities. The German Alpine Club (DAV) has already pointed out the expansion of climbing opportunities.
The goal is to strategically plan the South Sports Park for the next 10 to 15 years. Participation formats such as neighborhood walks and in-depth discussions will involve citizens in the planning process. This way, not only a sports field but a place that connects sports, nature, and community will be created.
Support and Collaboration: Funding for Sports Development
Funding for sports facilities and physical activity offerings is a central issue in Freiburg. In 2025, numerous funding applications were successfully submitted, and in 2026, the focus will be on further investments. The Solidarity Pact for Sports V, which provides 80 million EUR for sports infrastructure in Baden-Württemberg over the next five years, is a milestone.
An example of a long-term investment is the future project of the Freiburger Turnerschaft of 1844 e.V. The city supports the club with 9.1 million EUR over ten years. At PTSV Jahn Freiburg e.V., the project "Jahn 2032" is also planning a new center, with demolition work starting in 2026 and construction scheduled to begin in 2027.
Not only large projects benefit. Small clubs and initiatives also receive support. For instance, the teaching pool in Munzingen is being made available for club use, and a free sports and physical activity area is planned for the Dietenbachpark. This shows that Freiburg is not only investing in infrastructure but also in inclusivity and accessibility.
Sports Districts: A Successful Initiative for the Future
The Freiburg Sports Districts are a central measure of the Sports Development Plan 2024–2040. They connect sports clubs, schools, and kindergartens in the districts and offer more than 100 weekly physical activity opportunities. In March 2026, a seventh district was established in Landwasser, and the number of participating clubs increased by 44%.
The city works closely with partners such as AOK, the Alliance 52, and the GKV Alliance to ensure long-term funding. An evaluation by the Freiburg University of Education shows that the development goals have been largely achieved so far. By 2030, all districts are to be included in a Sports District.
A special project is the Freiburg Language-Ball School, which operates at 65 kindergartens and 14 schools and combines language support with physical activity. Overall, the model is a success – not only for the clubs but also for the health and integration of children.
Outlook: Events and Future Challenges
March 2026 was not only marked by planning and investments but also by cultural and sports events. The Sports Gala at the concert hall, the inclusive sports day in April, and the Deaf Europeans Championship in October show that Freiburg remains active in the event scene as well.
Another topic is Padel. Although the sport is growing in Freiburg, there is still no publicly accessible court. The city plans to enable sports clubs to offer Padel in cooperation with commercial providers – under clear conditions. In this context, the distinction between non-profit and commercial use is crucial.
The next Sports Committee is scheduled for June 10, 2026 and will address topics such as the Beach Tour, safety concepts in sports, and athletics. Until then, the city will continue to focus on investments, inclusivity, and collaboration – because sport in Freiburg is not just a leisure activity but a central part of urban development.
