Housing and Urban Development: Safety, Education, and Integration
In March, several urban development projects were approved that will shape Freiburg's future. The new construction of the Violet Children and Family Center on Krozinger Straße is a milestone in early childhood education and family integration. With a budget of 10.5 million €, the building will be constructed to an efficiency house standard and thus contributes to climate neutrality. The investment comes from the double budget and the mid-term financial plan, with 1.406 million € already covered by the building insurance.
In addition, the renovation of the Freiburg Theater was approved with 29.6 million €. This investment not only strengthens the cultural infrastructure but also includes energy-saving measures. Also approved was the new construction of the Kappel Fire Station (3.9 million €) and changes to building plans in Dietenbach, indicating long-term planning and sustainability.
Education: Prevention, Integration, and Structural Development
In March, Freiburg's education policy focused more on topics such as school absenteeism and career orientation. The project "Every School Day Counts" has already collected data from 15,500 students to analyze absenteeism. In parallel, the EIA-PassUs project supports 573 students through internships and job application training – a step towards practical training.
With the recommendation to introduce school streets, school zones, and community schools, a structural change was prepared, which the city council is expected to decide on before the summer holidays. In addition, guidelines for the prevention of school absenteeism were presented, and a coordination circle was established to support this issue in the future.
Climate and Mobility: Sustainability and Inclusion
Freiburg remains on course in climate policy: The new Violet Center will be equipped with a photovoltaic system of 70 kWp, and the theater renovation includes energy-saving measures. In addition, it was unanimously decided to commission a feasibility study for an accessible Münsterplatz – an important signal for inclusion in public space.
In the field of traffic, the Advisory Board for People with Disabilities discussed a car-sharing project for wheelchair users, indicating an awareness of mobility justice. In addition, the opening hours of basketball courts in Herdern and Neuburg were discussed, suggesting a stronger inclusion of citizens in municipal offerings.
Social and Political Affairs: Partnerships, Human Rights, and Citizen Participation
In March, Freiburg also took a stand on social issues. The readiness to accept people from Afghanistan was reaffirmed, and city partnerships were further developed with a focus on human rights. In the Advisory Board for People with Disabilities, specific issues such as barrier-free access and the situation of the deaf population were discussed.
Politically, a packaging tax was also unanimously adopted, underlining the city's pioneering role in waste prevention. In addition, an inter-party motion was accepted to create spaces for neighborhood work in the ECA settlement – a sign of the importance of neighborhood work in urban development.
Outlook: What's coming?
Freiburg is moving further towards becoming a sustainable, inclusive, and culturally rich city. The approved projects show that investments in education, safety, and culture are central. In addition, climate policy is being increasingly linked with investment measures, supporting the city in its climate neutrality strategy. In the coming weeks and months, the focus will be on the implementation of these projects – and on the participation of citizens shaping Freiburg.
