April 2026 – Climate Protection, Education, and Infrastructure in Esslingen
In April 2026, the city of Esslingen focused on decisive topics such as climate protection, education, and urban infrastructure. The City Council and various committees set priorities for the future.
Climate Protection and Heat Planning in Focus
Climate Protection Remains a Central Topic
April 2026 was marked by comprehensive decisions in the area of climate protection. In the Committee for Construction, Mobility, and Climate Protection, a resolution was adopted in principle for the renovation of the HRB Eissee with a budget of 740,000 euros. In addition, a Heat Action Plan was further developed, focusing particularly on construction-related measures and heat protection for vulnerable population groups.
A central point was the assessment of heat protection in municipal facilities such as kindergartens, schools, senior and nursing homes. The plan includes short-term measures such as mobile air conditioning units and long-term solutions such as climate-resilient building concepts. Funding will be provided through funding programs like KLIMOPASS, which can cover up to 75% of the costs.
Heat Protection in Esslingen Schools
In the Committee for Education, Care, and Supervision, a heat protection concept for Esslingen schools was approved. At temperatures of at least 25 °C by 11 a.m., school management may declare heat-free days. The measures include relocating classes to cooler rooms, mobile ventilation, and the use of sun protection systems. In the long term, greening and cooling technologies are planned.
Renovation of School Toilets
Another focal point was the renovation of WC facilities at 30 schools. With a total volume of 7.15 million euros, 182 rooms covering 2,300 m² are to be renovated. The work includes in-house efforts by the city-owned company Esslinger Grundstücks- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (SGE) as well as external planning and construction work, which should be completed by 2028.
Education and Culture: New Offers and Collaborations
New Kindergarten in Esslingen
A milestone for Esslingen's educational policy was the signing of a letter of intent for the construction of a childcare facility in the ALWO 1 housing project. Mayor Yalcin Bayraktar, Dean Klaus-Peter Lüdke, and managing directors Nadine Scherer and Marco Gölz of ALWO 1 GmbH signed the agreement. This is another step to meet the demand for kindergarten places in Esslingen.
Support for Cultural Projects
The Committee for Culture, Sports, and Social Affairs supported several cultural initiatives. 15,000 euros were allocated for collection development and 2,614.50 euros for restoration work at Villa Merkel. In addition, the opening of the "Toilette für Alle" at the Burg on 19.03.2026 was announced, as well as the Theodor Haecker Prize Award to Philip Obaji Jr. on 24.04.2026.
Social Offers for All Generations
New social services such as the grief café for childless parents and the form assistance service at the Intergenerational and Community Center Pliensauvorstadt were introduced. These measures contribute to strengthening social participation and support.
Infrastructure and Finance: Investments and Renovations
Extension of Färbertörlesweg
The City Council decided on the extension of Färbertörlesweg to the Neckar River. The new section also carries the name Färbertörlesweg. The renovation also includes the installation of two street signs with a budget of 500 euros per sign. Follow-up costs from 2027 amount to 50 euros per year for 20 years.
Consolidation Measures and Staff Reductions
In April, a resolution was adopted for the consolidation of the budget for the years 2026 to 2029. With a consolidation volume of 25.7 million euros and an identified volume of 43.1 million euros, a staff reduction of approximately 172 positions will be accompanied. In addition, 1,416,049 euros from 2025 were transferred to the fiscal year 2026.
Additional Cost Decision for Hospital Pharmacy
Another financial decision concerned the increase in funding for the hospital pharmacy with 1,434,144 euros in additional costs. In addition, delegations of authority for various projects were adopted to make financial planning more flexible.
Outlook: What's Coming Next?
The coming months will be characterized by the implementation of the Heat Action Plan, the renovation measures at schools, and the further planning for the kindergarten construction in ALWO 1. In addition, financial consolidations and staff measures will remain in focus. The city of Esslingen is thus pursuing a stable and climate-friendly path into the future.
